Skill-Based
I'm thinking of buying Guild Wars. It looks like a cool game that I can really get into without leaving in a month (and the only MMO where after leaving I can come back free of charge.) I've played many MMOs (Lost Kingdoms, Everquest, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies, Final Fantasy XI, City of Heroes, Everquest 2, and World of Warcraft) for over 5 years, and this game, from what I've heard, does two things very different from regular MMOs (please correct me if I'm wrong):
-Instances zones for group-based missions -Is skill based, and not based as much on time playing I can understand the first part. But I can't figure out the second part. I read on the box that how good your character plays is based on how well you play and not how long you play. How does this work? I've also heard it called "skill-based"... which I can't understand, because this would mean it has to be something like an fps, rts, or adventure game. Can someone explain this to me? |

so you get instanced gaming (helps cut back on server stress as i unterstand) and the skill based means that they add in elements that force you to have skill. For instance only 8 spells at a time (WoW lets you have like 30+) so you have to choose carefully. And a person 5 lvls higher than you can still die to you if they dont know what they are doing and you do. lvling dont really giv eyou that much in this game (i think 20hp and some skill points thta are powerfull but still kinda trivial) and since there are no lvl reqs on anything (armour or spells) you can be competateive with those higher lvl people

12 year old picks up a MMORPG and runs into a certain dungeon and dies at level 20. Goes away and spends time grinding aimlessly comes back at level 40 and runs in and kills everything using the same tactic.
12 year old in guild wars gets to level 20 and can't complete a dungeon because its too hard, goes away and completes more missions and quests and comes back he is still level 20 as that is the cap, he runs in to the same dungeon and still dies. Smart player arrives at dungeon and is level 16, he takes it slow and asses the situation, notes the mobs movement patterns and type of mobs. He is able to complete the dungeon after a few attempts because he learns, adapts his skill set and understands the game. |

Everquest was class/profession based, where each character was the same. DAoC on the other hand was skill based where you put points into your character to make them excel in a certain area.
And that is exactly what guildwars is, it's skill based where you place points into a specific skilltree to make your skills/spells better in that area. |
