If I have, say, a purple or gold staff (for example), would I ruin it or badly alter it or downgrade it, or something evil, IF I added a different, say staff head to change some of the abilities??? say from +armor to +health? Will it even let you do this?

(Just got me a fine gold staff and don;t want to kill it accidentally

If you add a different upgrade to the item, any upgrade that is currently on the item will be lost. You will get a message warning you about what you're going to do if you attempt to upgrade something that already has one on it.

So, the new upgrade will replace the old one yet? And will the item lose it's "status" (i.e purple, gold) doing this?

new upgrade replaces whatever is on there.
As far as I know, the color remains the same.
