Curious about GW and joining.
Well, I currently play WoW and while it's great, I'm losing intrest from the constant Warlock nerfs and the continual beat down that I recieve.
So, my question to everyone is, "Should I try GW?" I've been reading the forums a little bit and I've already decided on a profession (W/N). Currently I play a 54 UD Warlock on Arthas and Warrior / Necromancer seems to suit me most (Used to play a Dark Knight / Thief on FFXI). So, any suggestions on GW, how I should start out, advice, etc. Would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Zetsumei |

This is my 1st online rpg and I love it. I could never pay a monthly fee so this is the 1st one I have tried and I play as much possible.

I was a Warlock in WoW, cancelled my account because I got sick of Soul Shards, nerfs and getting zerged every 5 minutes and came to Guild Wars.
I will say, the tutorial area (first 5-6 levels) is ok fun, but once you leave the tutorial (pre-searing) the game kicks into over drive. If you like missions and quest, this game rocks. Hugely interesting missions, huge battles, very casual friendly, no ganking, actual BALANCED PVP! (Imagine that!) that is super fun. Wow feels like more of a MMO due to the massive amounts of people everywhere, but Guild Wars feels more like an RPG because >I< make the decisions that affect my character. In WoW a warlock is a warlock is a warlock, they're all the same. In this game, there could be a bazillion different Warlock/Necros with a bazillion different combos of skills making each person unique. Anywayz, I loved WoW, but I'm enjoying Guild Wars more. |

My friend plays a warlock and owns all the time. I played a warrior on a PVP server, so I have the whining rights over you.
WoW and Guild Wars played together are the best. Keeps you from getting burned out of one game. One is pay, one is not. Works great. |

My name is Monarch. I used to be a Dragoon/Thief on FFXI. More recently, I was a Night Elf Druid on World of Warcraft (with several alts.) In the past I have had high level characters in EQ, EQOA, and EVE, among many others. I say this only so that you understand my background. Turn off the WoW, set down the FFXI. Leave your accounts active for the next term, because you never know. But don't bother playing for a little while. Welcome to Guild Wars! Here at GW you don't have to pay if you decide not to play this evening. Here at GW, you are never going to be "just a heal-bot." Here at GW you will never, ever need to worry about getting ganked while you run a quest. Here at GW you don't need to worry about being cutout from PvP because you aren't high enough level yet, or because you haven't done ten trillion Dire Maul runs, or camped the Kraken or Simurgh for twenty-four consecutive hours. The first thing to remember is that Guild Wars is not like any of the other online games you've played. Rangers can be good at melee. The healers can do damage. Warriors can cast spells. In GW you are not one class, but two. And both of them are actually useful! When you get ready to start the game, just keep these in mind (in no particular order): 1.) A 'normal' player will usually reach the top level (20) sometime within 40 hours of playtime. For most folks that's maybe 1-2 weeks. Start one of every character and try it out. You won't be losing any time. 2.) Don't listen to anyone who tells you your class combo sucks. I know you thought your Mom was joking all those years, but you truly can be anything you want to be. If the character sucks, then the odds are very high that it's operator error. 3.) Don't go overboard. Playing too much will kill brain cells. You don't need to try and milk as much time out of $15 a month as possible, so get some sun now and then. (Unless you live in Seattle, that is.) You'll thank yourself later. 4.) Don't go looking for phat lewt. It isn't there. Your lewt is pretty much the same as everyone else's lewt. 5.) Play PvE, but don't become a carebear. Play PvP, but don't become "1337." Balance in all things grasshopper. 6.) Find a fun guild, do missions with them. Pick up groups for missions are horrible, but playing them with some friends is one of the coolest things you'll ever do. The same thing goes for PvP. 7.) Get used to the henchmen AI, I guarantee you'll need to use it at some point. Sometimes the AI henchmen are smarter than the players around you. 8.) Don't buy black dye. It isn't worth it. Just treat the game nicely, and the game will treat you nicely in return. Until you get to the Wilds, and then your Healer Henchman will pretend she's a tank and get slaughtered... but I digress. I think you get the idea. |

Tip 9) Do not visit Guild Wars Guru or you will waste all your time writing a huge post instead of actually playing.
I agreed with some of that though, maybe not the parts about WoW and mmorpgs. Its a completely different ballpark. |

Best advice I heard all day . Really, until you have so much gold saved up that you actually have more platinum than gold, black dyes WILL cut into your tiny profits. The average price for black (post-searing) is somewhere around 800-1000 gold. The vendor sells it for close to 1500 gold. EACH bottle. LOL. I will stick with the cool blue / silver / purple and save myself a platinum or 2, LOL. Jana |

I'm currently playing COH, (and no plans on stopping). But GW seemed like an interesting change of pace. My question to those playing currently: is 4 characters per account enough? On COH, I get 88 potential toons. I'm no where near the cap, but being a bit of an alt-aholic, and seeing the potential for more classes and races to come down the pipeline with the future updated content, and will all the combos/speed in reaching the cap, do you guys find 4 characters doable? Or do you get to points where you'd like to try somthing new, but don't want to delete any current alts? By the way, all of the current advice you folks have passed on has been very helpful to me as well. Thanks, |

One thing that tends to get overlooked is there is a lot of versitility built into the charactr model with the way you can use points to shift attribute numbers around every character has a huge range of play. Here is a quick example. A warrior/elementalist - without remaking a character but just by swaping around attrib points and different skills. he could be a sword wielding fire mage as a fast attack nuker or an axe wielding earth mage as a near inpregnable roadblock. not to mention you could use a hammer and water magic and be a knockdown slowdown(using freeze spells) master |

Ah, i wasnt aware how much you could respec a character after it was in play. (in COH we have to go on missions to gain respec rights, though occasionally get gift respecs)
Thanks for the info! I'll very likely be joining the ranks of Guild Wars players soon! |
