Default Warrior / Ranger ???

Does anyone see any advantages of being a warrior/ranger over a ranger/warrior?

Like does armor penetration from Strength skill cross over into the ranger attacks?

Looking to make a melee ranger and dont know which way i should go

I'm a R/W, and I wouldn't recommend it for melee. I tried it and it didn't work so well - I generally got smacked in hand-to-hand, and didn't like having to put points in sword/axe/hammer instead of expertise/marksmanship. I've seen other posts on this forum from people who do claim to make it work, however, so maybe I was just playing it poorly. I do think that Expertise is more valuable than Strength, but if you're planning on tanking you'd probably want the Warriors better armor for physical damage.

Why do you want a melee ranger? It's kind of an oxymoron. I can see using a W/R build in PvE to better pull enemies out of groups using longbow and then switching to melee. Did you have a battle style in mind?

I have a melee R/W, and it works fantastically.

Armor class is not all that much worse than warrior (plus you'll have far better elemental resistance.) Troll Unguent's only downside it the 3 second cast, but it's also tough to argue with +9 health regen while it's up. And to that the best defensive abilities in the game, and you'd be surprised what the R/W can do.

Oh yes, you can't forget Throw Dirt. Hands down one of the handiest abilities in a melee furball, and it's Expertise-based (i.e. useless for Warriors, who are Strength-based.) In fact, there are plenty of awesome expertise skills for a melee R/W.

The only trouble is: You won't be getting the really good skills till later, so most people just give up and go home early on this particular character build.

That's just my experience, of course.

Edit: I am working on finishing and fine-tuning this build, and will most likely submit it to community after a bit.

My thinking for a W/R build was to be primarly a tank with traps and a pet! Mainly focusing Wilderness Survival & Beast Mastery skills for traps, ungent, and pet stuff.

And then of course spec'ing the rest in a tank type setup.

In certain situations I was thinking that this build could be a good healer / nuker protector. You good sit back with them sicking your pet and shooting your bow and when the opposition comes in for you support group you could hold em off with traps and melee.

Anyways im gonna try it and see how it pans out in PVP.

My main is a W/R. Marksman and Survial spec, with hammer(cause i just love hammer!)

I have the Ithas Bow. It does really well with 10 mark for my lvl atm.

Now this works really well with the Brawler and Fighter henches, they run up to mobs when i start firing stopping most if not all mobs.
The other henches tend to stay with me now. I have done alot better this way as a W/R.

I generally do the bow till the beasties are on me then switch to hammer.

This direction seems to work well, for me. It may work for you.

In real people groups, I generally follow this same strategy and funtion as puller. So far, it's working.

Havnt done alot of PvP, but I do well enough, not stellar but ok.

As soon as a decent sword drops(i have yet to get a good sword drop, hammers and axes galore, just no swords) I plan on trying the sword instead of my hammer.

Ranger/Warrior sustained damage dealers, in my opinion, are better than W/something sustained melee damage dealers in almost every respect. You miss out on the armor penetration of strength, and some of the good damage skills in that line, but you more than make up for that with being able to spam your energy based attack skills without having to worry about running out for a while. With a warrior primary if you want to use energy attack skills often you have to bring a skills for energy management, i.e. bonetti's defense or flourish, which is one less skill that you could be doing damage with.
Okay, thats energy, but warrior skills also come in adrenaline based versions. Tigers fury, the beast mastery skill that gives you +33% attack speed, is perfect for these. But, if you're a primary warrior, 10 energy to keep casting it every 10 seconds is too much, but if you have expertise, it'll only cost 6, letting you get those adrenal skills charged and do damage faster.

BTW, should this thread be moved to the build discussion forum?

I have a W/R that seems to work pretty well especailly in parties since if there are alot of back lines players in your party you can get down and dirty but if you have quite a few warriors then you can sit back and use frenzy to hasten your ingnite arrows on your emenies from afar. it works well so long as you know the limits of it because they are not like a W/Mo where they can take a beating and still come back for more without dieing.
