Unless you can find a VERY awesome staff with nice mods on it, a wand/focus will almost always be better.

When do you start seeing VERY awsome staves? Soon after searing or well in to it?

I'm in the fire island area (way Way WAY after searing) and have yet to see a staff that could touch my wand/focus combo. Staves have a max of +10 energy and focuses (which can only be used with one-handed wands) have a max of +12. Wands and staves have the same max damage, so without mods, staves can't compete. The only "advantage" to staves is that they can be upgraded whereas wands and focuses can not, but you'd have to find some nice upgrades to made it worth it. My focus currently adds 30 HP (I've yet to find a staff upgrade that good) and has +1 fire damage (forget the percentage) so even the mods you can upgrade staves with CAN be found on wands/focues. Staves got the shaft in this game, and I don't recall ever seeing anybody using one.

I am only in Yak's Bend, level 13 and I have been using mostly staves.
I started off using wand/focus but later I kept finding staves with good abilities and I never find wands with good abilities. The staff I have now is +7 energy (better than any focus/wand I've find), fast-recharge (around 10%) and I think some bonus to earth magic (which I don't use too much). And the damage is something like 9-14, the best I've found so far. |

I have a ridiculous earth wand.
It isn't even the BEST either. It's 11-21 dmg with +11 energy (-1 regen) .. I've found others will skill recharge and energy +3 or something. Then with a +12 focus item that perhaps gives another recharge or casting bonus. Wow. That's what you want to look for In my opinion. Staffs are ok.. but ehh.. |

You can equip a focus with a staff, but you aren't getting the benefit from it.
