Default Thinking bout buying GW

I read some of the sticky thread and I've searched a bit for the answers to my questions. Likely someone has already asked this before also but I just can't spend hours and hours just to see so I'll ask again. Please have patience with me if this has been asked . I'm wondering how GW compares to games like Everquest and Diablo II, both of which I played quite a bit. I liked D2 but it just felt like there was not enough game content and it was too easy to just get it all done and end up doing the same thing over and over and over. In Everquest I felt like it can take years to be useful, but there is always something new to do and explore and obtain. I suppose I'm hoping GW is kind of in between. I don't want to take years to be useful, but I don't want to see all the game has to offer in a month. I would appreciate any input on how GW compares to those two games by anyone that has played them. How long does it take to get to the end game content once you start. Any info would be useful. Thanks for your time.

You're actually right in the fact that it doesn't take years to become useful, and you definitely won't see all the game has to offer in a month. Beside the fact that ArenaNet will be adding expansions every 6-9 months (not necessary to buy to continue playing the game btw) and constantly working on new content to stream to us, the PvP part of the game will never get old. Each and every time you play PVP, you will be facing new opponents and it will take new strategy to beat each next team you face.

Also, GW is a game based primarily on skill...that is, once you get your character to level 20 and get all the skills and items you want. It may take a good 50-70 hours to do this, but it could also go pretty quickly if you have friends really helping you get through. Or you could go straight to playing a premade PvP character, which you can tweak with the skills and items you've unlocked.

But don't worry, getting your character to level 20 and such can actually be quite fun while teamed up with other players. I find it fun going out and taking down enemies with my friends. Some say there is too much grind like the other MMOG's out there, and I do agree that the system is not perfect, but it's decently close to where it should be. But I'm sure ArenaNet will make some changes soon (hopefully).

Good luck.

Thanks for the helpful post fix dark. I suppose your post brought up another question. If you get all the skills and items you want at lvl 20, what else is there to keep people going other than the pvp aspect. Is there no other reason to keep searching for gear upgrades or new things? or is it all just trying to decide how to use your resources in pvp after lvl 20?

there are 25 missions (non pvp) to start
there are 60-70 explorable areas (non pvp, not small) to start with additional content to be added by streaming in

from GW

Guild Wars, in contrast, is based around your skill as a player. Our maximum level is twenty and you hit that very quickly, after about 20-30 hours of play. ,We call that 'The Point of Ascension'. Almost all of the content in the game and in the future Chapters is only available to Ascended characters, which means we don't have to worry about providing different levels of content. All the good stuff will be available to everyone. It's not our intent to force people onto the levelling up treadmill, so the level cap in Guild Wars is almost meaningless.

edit

example of the streaming in new content is the link below which will be added in a few weeks

ArenaNet is constantly working on new areas that we can play in. But one could definitely say that PvP is THE main part of the game...I mean, look at the name of the game--> Guild Wars! So, I really think that in order to get the most out of Guild Wars, you should look into joining a guild.

But it does suck that you can only make 4 characters on your account, so you definitely can't try out very many combos...unless you delete your characters, but I think that's dumb.

I disagree with that. ArenaNet makes it seem like 20-30 hours is all that's required to start PvPing based off of skill alone, when most people still want to find many more skills...taking at least 50-70 hours I'd say.

an interview stated that when new professions and possibly races were added the number of slots would reasonably reflect the added need for more character space

Buy it. Love it. Truely one of the greatest MMOGs I've ever played, combines WoW, strategy and PvP all in one. It takes a while to get around the whole thing, if you dont' powerlevel the missions and PvE content can last you months.

How many times do I have to say this?
Guild Wars is not a MMORPG, it's a COORPG!
Go and play Final Fantasy XI if you wanna play MMORPG.

Little cranky eh?

And you will most likely have to say it until you realize that there will be new players checking out this game all the time.

Default Sooo tired....

Of people nit picking about this. look at the wakopedia definition of MMORPG and tell me WHY this game can't be called an MMORPG smart ass.

I'll save you the trouble:

"MMORPGs follow a client-server model. Players, running the clients, are represented in the game world by an avatar ??? a graphical representation of the character they play. Providers (usually the game's publisher), host the persistent worlds these players inhabit. This interaction between a virtual world, always available for play, and an ever-changing, world-wide stream of players animating individualized avatars characterizes the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game."

ehh... check... check... and check.
Bottom line:
WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS! IT FEELS AND PLAYS LIKE AN MMORPG AND FINAL FANTASY XI SUCKS BTW... I HAVE IT SITTING ON MY SHELF COLLECTING DUST. God Im so SICK of YOU people. And yes, I am cranky.
I guess since the adventure areas are isnatnced, it cant be considered an MMORPG... even though most of the GOOD mmorpg games have instanced areas now...

well the fact it is instanced is enough alone to not consider it a "real" mmorpg
but its still fun

not that i care, but, mmorpg stands for (and correct me if i'm wrong) Massivley Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

Massive? Yes.

Multiplayer? Yes, there is multiplayer.

Online? Yes.

Role? Yes you take on roles or "characters" in the form of "Professions"

Playing? Yes, you play it.

Game? Uh-yeah.

So does the term, after breaking it down, fit?

MMORPG = Guildwars

True or False?

.....

....

...

..

.

not really........

Guild Wars is more like a single player game with a multiplayer component such as Diablo 2

but never the less the game is worth buying and is cool

Why do people say Guild Wars isn't a mmorpg but they never said City of Heroes wasn't a mmorpg?
Guild Wars is City of Heroes in a medieval setting with PvP.

Don't go there!
It's like saying GW is awsome because of the PvE.
or
Isn't the next expansion going to increase the level cap?

Your just asking for a whole load of yelling from both camps.

If you feel like it's a mmorg then it's a mmorg. If not, then it's not! Best not to dig any deeper

I agree... I just don't understand why ANYONE would get their panties in a wad over someone calling it an MMORPG if thats what it is to them... I mean, you would think someone spat on their holy book the way some of these tards react. Most likely, the same type of people that argue over Drizzt Deurden like he is a real person.
