Headsets
Can anyone tell me if it's worth it to get a headset to chat with people on guildwars to Formulate strategies etc.
Also does anyone know the average number of people on gw who have headsets |

Yes, it is worth every penny.
The average number of people with hedsets, teamspeak/ventrilo, and the knowledge to use them, however, is unknown. If you are tombing, your team will want you to have a headset, teamspeak, and ventrilo. You should not have to buy anything other than the headset. If you are playing the underworld, or fissure, your team will want your to have a headset. Partly because these areas are very long and chatting is so much easier on a headset. If you are playing GvG, for my guild anyway, teamspeak/ventrilo is not a luxury, but a requirement. If you want to get an idea of how many headsets there are out there. Find out how many collecors editions there are out there, then add the number of players that did not buy the collectors edition because they already had a headset, and subtract the number of people that bought the collectors edition and already had a headset, then add the number of these headsets that were given away to friends so that they could chat without buying a headset, and then add the number of headsets that were bought because the buyers knew that the collectors edition headset can be uncomfortable. Anyway, I play with my headset on and teamspeak running even if I am not directly playing with anyone on the channel. For some guilds it is just easier to chat over the headset. |

not really...i mean they hear your voice...its just a easyer wa of communication. Its your choice if you give your name or address out. To me its just like walking past someone and starting a convo...is that personal? you decide...

I understand his concern... and if you're a girl (not an insult, a lot of gw players are girls and you can't really tell by the forum name) then it's all the more valid. But just explain to him that the only difference between a headset and typing is the speed of communication. Sure they hear your voice, but you would still exercise the same level of discretion that you would when typing. Just because you're actually speaking with your voice doesn't mean that you would be giving up your address, your personal stats (m/14/etc.). It's simply a game addition.
I'm quite sure that he's worried about your safety and not about the expense... Perhaps hunt around on the net and find a good site that represents why you should have this and why it's "safe." Above all else when asking for a headset, just like going in on a mission in the game, having a strategy counts for everything, nagging will make his NO all the more firm. |

I personally dont see the need for any VC in tombs... guild battles and guild groups i can see using it for but for an average pick up group its rather useless in my opinion...its to hard to understand people for one when trying to speak over each other...its also much easier to just hit your macroed assist key then trying to figure out who is yelling GET THE $$$$ MONK lol. Dont get me wrong im not saying VC isnt worth it, I just dont think its as useful as this game trys to make it for just regular game play...with guild groups and what not its a lil different...in tombs ur just playing for fame and fun...but in guild battles ur playing for rank rating and fun...lil more on the line there so communication is very important. I would like to point out to people...VC DOES NOT MAKE A GRP, its the players and the skills that make it, so if a player doesnt have or use VC...dont flame them and call noobs, its really annoying to go to tombs these days and everyone spamming no noobs this and no noobs thats and get out of here you noob, this is a game where people have fun, and when people do the above mentioned things, you drive away good people and potential great players but thats off topic a bit....
My desk is always a mess so headset is better for me. P.S. sorry to get off topic and go on my little rant there but i see way to many rude people on this game lately, and its sad really because this game is supposed to be about fun, not about insulting other races, religions, gaming skill levels or their mommas weight eheh thanks for letting me say my peice though and sorry for going off topic by 3 miles or so |

Not to use it no, you can download it and use it for free, but to host a voice channel it does cost

On the upside, your dad does let you play online games and there are alot of parents who dont, so count your blessings. You do not need a headset for GW, its nice, but definately not needed. |

Voice com (whether it's via TeamSpeak or any other tool) definetly makes the game a lot more fun and a lot more effective when playing in a team. Thinks that take you ages to type can be clarified within seconds when you can talk. Plus ... you can often have a good laugh with your team mates.
But ... (and that's a BIG but) ... I have to differ: I found voicecom very effective when playing with friends (real life or guild), but very ineffective or even annoying when playing with strangers. In a random pick-up group you'll often find yourself face to face (or: mouth to ear, rather) with complete idiots, who start shouting abuses at everyone in the group as soon as things don't go the way they want it. |

There are lots of different voicecom tools and most of them are free. TeamSpeak is just one of them.
AFAIK there is no official TS server for GuildWars. If you want to speak with friends you can set up your own server or speak peer-to-peer, both free. If you don't have the bandwidth to run your own TS server there are many gaming websites and ISPs that run public servers free to use for everybody. Also, many clans/guilds run their own TS server. |

He always makes me pay for it... He makes me pay for flipping books to read! But then again I go to get new books once a month... and buy $70.00 worth I'll try with all the strategies etc. but I'm still pretty sure he'll say no... (Maybe if I tell him I'll only use it for friends?) And also is there alot of profanity that runs through the line? I dont really mind cause when I die I sometimes type "dam" but then I say "good try guys" so... Oh yeah and I'm a guy so... My mom would probably had let me have it... Do all headsets work on a dell-dimension 4700, penitium 4? My dad does pretty much all the computer stuff... the other day he told me to get a new mouse I bought! installed... I nearly screwed up my computer |
