Rangers role is hard to be defined. Thats why it is often said only good when used right. Rangers can be Dmg dealers, but perhaps not as good as ele or war unless practically all of your skills only focus on dmg.
Rangers can be Interupters, but might not have as much variety of interuppts as the mesmer have. Rangers role is pretty much Jack of All Trades. Choose what you want to be. The one role I haven't figured out for ranger is, how to be a very good farmer. >.< |

One example of ranger farming is using traps on melee-oriented mobs. Set up Barbed Trap & Flame Trap, lure in the enemy. As they're fighting you, of course, they trigger the traps. Use whirling defense and throw dirt to evade them, oath shot (elite) to recharge skills, and set your traps again. Rinse and repeat until enemy is dead. Most I've killed at a time with this method is five of those level 24 mountain trolls in the shiverpeaks, but I don't farm often. I'm sure someone else can do better. |

In addition to setting traps, also cast Favorable Winds on top of traps as bait. Pull mobs past spirit, cast Healing Breeze, and then they will aggro the spirit, and Poof! Works great on most melee. Hone your trapping skills and then get 7 Ranger friends to run rampant in Underworld.

For PvP the Ranger's role is usualy as a Monk shutdown.
For PvE the Ranger's role is usualy as the Puller. Both of these cases depend on being in a good team that understands tactics. There is no use for a shutdown in the arenas when it usualy comes down to "every man for himself", and there is no use for a puller if you're in a group of noobie "let me lead the way and we'll all charge in even though I'm a Monk" types. If, and I say again IF, you can get a team to set up in formation, using choke points on the map to funnel the mobs into tightly packed spaces with a War wall in front and a couple of nukers and healers behind, a Ranger can set down dust trap, maybe a ritual, and pull the mobs in. He can then run through the line or stop and become part of it, as the team needs. The important thing to remember is that you are a support character. You will never be able to put out the sort of spike dmg an Ele can manage, and you will never be able to stand on the line the way a War can. For this to work you nead team tactics, and a bit of skill as well. On the bright side, this strat can work anywhere, and will allow you to safely and almost easily farm the Underworld. In fact, once you get used to it, the most likely reason for you having to come back up topside is because more than one guy dropped. The team can usualy survive the first guy leaving, normaly only getting wiped if the team gets tired and/or bored and becomes careless. |

How one looks at a ranger says something about him/her as a person...A ranger has better defense against physical damage than any caster, and better elemental defense than any warrior. A ranger also does more non-elemental damage than an elementalist and more condition-based sustained damage than a warrior. Likewise, you can flip it around to say a ranger does less damage than an elementalist against a warrior who is weak to elemental attack, and less physical damage than a warrior against casters. Same arguments can be made for a ranger's defense.
So, it's like seeing a half glass of water either as half-filled or half-empty. This is the reason that you either hear people saying ranger rocks or sucks. Ranger's role, because of its versatility, can be used either to disrupt caster or a tank. Most people opt for caster disruption because there are way too many warriors out there. Given scarcity of good mesmers, ranger is often put in a role to attack monks. Ranger's armor is better than warriors in fending off elemental damage which makes him good against elementalist as well. It really all comes down to what role your team lacks and a ranger can just easily step in to fill it. Just my 2 cents. |

Rangers are meant to be versatile; the reason they suck is because you can only carry 8 skills, and it is very hard to be versatile with only 8 skills.

The key to ranger's is playing to their strenghts... high elemental armor, powerful traps, degens, and pretty decent sustained ranged dps with a spamable interrupt. Using Skills Like Greater Conflagration/Winter can allow a group of rangers to effectively have 115 armor against all physical and elemental damage. Throw in an elemental ward and a couple healing springs and you've got the makings of pure overpoweredness. It's refreshing that some have figure out the true power of rangers in UW. Not many group combinations can farm as well as 8 trap laying rangers.
