Ok, I'm jumping in late here(sorry), so I haven't read everyones wonderful posts on this topic...so I'm going to focus on what's near the bottom.
I agree that advertising in towns is a little weak, but I can also understand how that's the way a lot of casual players get in to guilds to just have fun. For deeper guilds, I think they should be in a party with you first, do a mission or quest perhaps, and while you're in that party, have that be your trial version of being in that guild...because that's pretty much what you do(unless you're going Hall of Heroes Hardcore with the PvP), and if you don't spend the time doing that with people, then you'll never know if they're worth having. My friend and I are about to start a guild...perhaps...We're both saving up for a Guild Hall(not the full blown 90k for the hall, about 40k or so) and that's pretty much how I'd like to get members, doesn't need to be special or anything, but I'd at least like to know the employer/employee before signing my days to them... |

There are dozens of guild listings online, even here on this site there's a big shwack listed. That's how I found my guild - wandered through a bunch of different listings visiting the pages of all the websites that interested me, found one that looked good AND had a screening process (email interview, and kicked out if people don't like you in the guild) and I really like 'em so far. Haven't grouped with them, but they're great for Q&A'ing and just being great people

I seen advertisement but no invites to me, perhaps because I run in european servers this have not reach the levels that in some other servers.
I think some people make "one player guild" to get a cape. As for entering the guilds ... well I am lv 15 and "guildless" (and wish to remain that way for the time being) but after the Lion's Gate mission I can understand why people want to join a guild ... getting help for the co-op missions were henchman are not exactly the best choice, nothing does say being on a guild will help you pass a mission but still a well organized guild with dedicated members (meaning those lv20 that instead of farming go out and help a fellow lv 10 guild member to pass a mission and get the bonus) can make all the diference ... not that a team of random people cannot but changes you end up with a unbalanced group or with someone that log out at half the mission are as big as being in a bad guild. |

I have a policy regarding guilds. If my invitation consists of an unannounced 'you have 1 guild invitation', followed shortly afterwards by someone jumping in front of me saying 'join guild' over and over, I kick them between the legs and move on.

I once joined a guild. Briefly. They seemed most interested in just blasting through the missions as quickly as possible while chatting inanely the entire time. As soon as the mission was over, I left the guild.

To be Frank, If a guild had a low amount of people it might be just a group of rl friends just wanting to play together and have a cape and a guild hall!

You may see it that way, but you obvisouly don't have the lifestyle and same type of things going on as I do. If you ever played FFXI and got anywhere, you didn't need voice coms to communicate and play effectively. I'm not saying it isn't a nice feature but for people to tell others that sorry we don't want you or kick you out because you don't use the vent/ts then that is discrimination in my book. Just b/c you have ts/vent doesn't mean your half as good a player as "Bob the Dork" who doesn't use it. People have many reasons for choosing not to use it or can't use it, doesn't change the fact they are a good player. Except anyone unwilling to try and see how good will never know will they. |

if you don't use vent or ts. you can't say its not better with it.
as a person constantly on vent. i can safely say it cuts time off everything. its faster to say something that to type it out.. and if you're on vent with the people in the group. they can't just leave you in the middle of a mission without giving a reason (unless they drop connection or something) i hate the times when i've tried to complete some mission. starting with a 6 man party. i end up completing the mission on my own. or having 1 teammate with me. i was trying to get a character to ring of fire. and i needed to do thunderhead keep (obviously...) so we get a 7-man party together and bring a henchman. only to have 4 leave in the first 30 seconds because: "why are you doing this? i wanted to go to the grotto. you suck!" and "so 2 people left. we might be able to do it. but it will take another 15 minutes. screw them. i don't wanna actually work for this" how can you tell if <class> LFG means mission or some outpost/explorable area/rune farming(like the people used to do in gates of kryta. join a random party and go drake hunting) so this started out about how well vent works.. ended with how much i hate pick up groups.. which is why i rarely do them |

Vent/TS. It isn't about weather or not it is a better experience. It was about people kicking / not allowing a person into the party (or guild) based on whether or not they have Vent/TS. That is Discrimination. As mentioned though, these people without Vent/TS can be good players and in denying them a chance to prove it, any party (or guild) is merely hurting themselves.
As a sidenote: I don't have Vent/TS... based on what I've heard about either software I'm not sure I'd want it. However, in playing Counter Strike Source, I enjoy the voice communication built in, and yes it does make for a better overall experience. More so because it isn't 'always on'. You have to press a button to activate it, thus I don't have to listen to everyone's breathing, and shouting for that matter. I'm just as good at snipering with or without the voice communication though. Anyway, back to another issue I read about here. The Guild size restriction idea = bad idea. I am a member of a small guild, currently there are five of us. We all know each other in real life, and thus trust each other. We do plan in growing the size in the future, as I for one would love to get into GvG when I get to that point in the game. But with such a limitaion (must have 10 people) our guild would be deleted and that is simply not right. From reading posts on these forums, there are actually a few people I'd like to meet in the game, simply because they sound like mature and intelligent people here. One such person mentioned being a member of a small guild as well. A thought sparkles in my mind about merging... but that's something I can look into with that party if they're interseted. |

well i got vent & teamspeak both , & while they do indeed improve ingame communications for the lazy typers, i personally couldnt be buggered pushing down the up arrow everytime i wanted to talk , that & no doubt my noisy kids would jump on & think they ran a radio station.. <_<
vent helps but should not be a requisite for guilds , but then again thats what helps guilds hold a personality tho so its thier choice. me i couldnt find a guild for me so i just opened a guildwars chapter for my beloved Utopia guild, gets a bit lonely but im sure itll fill up (if you build it they will come) sorta thing^^ Sigh.. is it just me or are most guildwars players , Negative & judgemental? ingame i ask for help or party i either get ignored or insulted , majority of posts here are bitch after moan after whine.. is it the competitiveness? im only just nearing lvl16 my first real char so i spose im just "noob".. anywayz guild or no guild it only matters that you enjoy the game & play it the best you can---or not, & make interesting friends from all over the world. hmmm Do you play to win, for fun , or both ? you decide, dun bitch at others for choosing different. |

If they really decide to close down guilds based on member count, then that's too bad. However, I don't see why they should care how many members a guild has. It's not like it's killing their servers... Last edited by MaglorD; Jun 02, 2005 at 08:50 AM // 08:50.. |

This is exactly why my guild is so small, i rarely ever find someone I would want to invite, but when I do, they're already in a guild (which probably doesn't have much activity anyway).

Does it really matter if there are only a few (or even only one) members in a Guild. Does it affect performance? Does it affect other people in the GW community?
I created a guild because I thought I may as well spend my hard-earned gold on a nice cape. I will start recruiting at some stage - once I understand how the process works. ie: finding sensible, mature, friendly & helpful people in a community that seems to be overrun by people who do not meet this criteria. |

Well I originally thought that if you have a guild smaller, say less than 8 people, then they shouldn't allow the guild. Since I started the post I've joined 3 different guilds which I tried based on talking to a current member. In that time all but one of the guilds disbanded. Leaders left, officers left, etc. etc. In the other guild it was just a few people who were acting like 12 year olds. Thus I think I will still stay away from a guild unless I get to know someone well and they can say their guild doesn't suck and won't break up in a day or two. I'd prefer to just get my own damn cape and guild and I'd be happy with that at this point.
As for discrimination towards people who don't use ts/vent, which was talked about before, I will NEVER use it. I could care less what some loser on the other end thinks. TS/Vent may be useful and give a slight advantage, but I'd like to see the proof. I'm sure the major PvP'ers use it, but they've also been PvP'ing a lot more than anyone else. I guarantee if you have a good group of 8 who play together a lot, have PvP'd and understand the game well. They could do just as well if not better than those with ts/vent. Not to mention who wants to listen to a 15 year old on vent/ts acting like a retard. I work in public school systems and see/hear enough crap from them in a day. Don't need it in a game I enjoy playing. |

I collect guild invitations. I had about 10 at one point before I goofed around with making a guild and cape for about 5 minutes, then went back to being guildless. XD
