when you ascend and you're < lvl 20, do you automatically go to level 20 or has this been changed since release?

This has changed after the release.

1. There is a Doppleganger who uses all of your skills taken.
2. You gain 50,000 experience, and 50,000 more if you defeat it in under 50 seconds. There is no Auto-20 gain in this patch anymore.

If you progress normally through the game, there's a real good chance the initial 50k xp will bring you to 20. This patch was not intended to punish players by removing the auto-level to 20 but rather give an xp bonus for those already lvl 20 before ascension. The 50k now goes a long way towards acquiring more skill points as well, since they capped the skill point xp levels at 20 also.
