The drops should work the same way they do at the end of the mission when items that drop from the boss are dealt with. A little screen that appears on the right of your screen showing the items you got. You can pick and choose what you want from them, or just ignore it entirely. That way, whatever you don't want you can just ignore and it gets thrown back publicly.
Although, I still feel the current system is somewhat unfair. Time and time again I play with others and golds, purples and the like don't drop for me. I get stuck with the collectable items... whoopee. Or when multiple items get reserved for the same player, it becomes rather frustrating. Mainly when it's a player who isn't doing very much to aid the party, it isn't fair that all the good stuff drops for them. I could just be saying this because I'm bitter that the HoH gave me a Gold Gladius instead of a Sigil... Also my advice to be to everyone is never play Diablo II if something like this bugs you. You have players in that game running third party programs that pick up items the instant they drop. Good luck every accumulating value playing publicly in that game. Be thankful there is a reserve system of any kind in this game. |

Ridiculous
WOW! This shows the average IQ level of players in this game. I get put on an ignore list because of a comment I made in this forum. That's funny. I appreciate you put me on because the feelings are mutual.
As for Maelindar's comment: "I think everyone agrees that stealing items is a bad thing. It is clearly a somebody exploiting the system. Danfrancisdo is just trolling. The 5 outrageous responses on this topic are the only posts he has made. He just wants to stir up trouble." Wrong. I just registered for this forum yesterday so of course I only have 3 posts. Lastly. I do feel this is ridiculous. Listen. The developers have made it all to easy to become resurrected in this game. Don't you think there should be some penalty besides the paltry DP already in place? To just have your drops go public when you die is nothing. In addition, we are lucky the drops are even reserved for anybody. How in the hell, if this was more life-like would that happen? This is the FIRST RPG I have played that reserves drops for people. This is an annoying part of the game. I love how the game desides who gets whose loot. Where is the role-playing here?????????????? Guys GET A GRIP!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Given a choice between the system as it is now, and having drops NEVER become public, I would prefer drops to never become public. I strongly feel this is a better way to do things, unless someone has a nonobvious point I've missed.
It's sad that this would be a better way to do things. Hopefully there's an even better option, but it seems like it would be a trivial change on the part of ArenaNet to make drops never become public. And it's not like you can't still pick it up and drop it so others can have it if you want. Eventually, it might be nice for there to be some UI elements that let the player force an item to be public, but I'd rather that not happen automagically. |

so you advocate giving better items to people that don't want to fight? If all drops were public I'd just sit back until something dropped and go grab it while you were fighting...leaving you to die. But what do I care I got the purple drop before anyone else did.... |

I've never had a drop stolen...I generally only party with people I know...and I put people through a screening process before I join a group with them. I have a very outward personality...it's harsh and blunt and it offends most people. IRL and ingame...if it doesn't bother them and they "lol" it off...then generally they're the type of person I want to be playing with. So I'll make fun of warriors for being meatheads or being retarded...and if the warrior takes offense, then I don't want to party with them. same for all the other classes....essentially I don't want to party with anyone that takes the game too seriously. |

Now wait a minute guys. Lets say you get a Yellow drop, and die before you can pick it up?
What if the surviving party doesn't have a res? The 5 minute timer allow them to pick your stuff up so it's not wasted. What we really need is a system that allow you to *release* an items ownership! I get this all the time. I get a drop I dont want, but someone else does want. I can't take the time to trade it to them during action, but I would gladly release my title on the item. |

Player's who steal items like that are @$$holes.Plain and simple. If the drop is for somebody else leave it. Cause next time, IT WILL happen to you. I'm recording all these player names, if this happens when they.re in my group I'm giving their items to the players who they scammed. Consider it repayment for his theft.
Yes, there are nice players like me out there. |

[QUOTE] That doesn't address the original issue - The person picked up his stuff alright, for the sole purpose of keeping it themselves because it WAS a rare item. No hassle of trading etc. and there is ALWAYS time after a fight to do something like this or trade. |

Can't believe you're still arguing about this. I mean, this is obviously a design flaw.
Items should NEVER become public, unless the player in question leaves. If he doesn't want it, and someone else in the party does, then this other person can just ask for it. Up to the rightful owner to decide to charge the other person for it or not. |

If some lowlife scum starts trying to blackmail you with "Give me the [whatever] or I'll [whatever]", you just know they'll map out as soon they get it anyway, so tell them politely no and why such behaviour is unacceptable, and take the consequences if they drop out. Not much else you can do. There's a reason governments don't pay ransoms.

Secondly, if a member of your family died, would you be happy with all their posessions becoming 'public domain'? Would you be alright with people coming to the funeral and making a mad dash for any jewellery? Would you have an issue with people breaking into that person's house and taking their items because they were 'public domain' now? I think you would. |

I ran into something similar to this twice yesterday. In one team, a fellow had to go AFK for 20 minutes, just before a Shard dropped for him. While 5 of us went on to continue a part of a quest, two stood at the site waiting for the drop to time out. Later, when he came back, he was a good sport about it, and everyone laughed. Fortunately.
In a different group, a purple dropped for someone who was dead, and all but one of our monks died in the battle. The monk waited for timeout, grabbed the purple, then rezzed, saying "get over it," etc. A couple of battles later when the monk died, one other player and I convinced everyone else not to rez, even though it likely meant not finishing the quest (as it happened, the quest was broken anyway). Wasn't a happy scene and lots of ---- dashes were flying. But it made the point. The heart of the matter is the intent. If you willingly take advantage of someone's state (i.e. game death) for your own gain, it's unsportsmanlike and dishonorable. It's hard to legislate sportsmanship, but it should still be the code we strive for. |

Really if this happened to me, I'd give him the undieing spam treatment. Since you cant get Anet to do anything about it.
Same thing almost happened to me, whole group were freinds, so they decided not to rez me because I had a max shadow sheild on the ground. Lucky for me, they rezzed a ranger who was a randomer also and came to me with her signet. So to return the favor, we walked around the whole area and aggroed everything. This caused them to use enough Racist/Vulgar/Offensive language to get them banned. But I wasnt sure how to report them. |
