Simple question.

Is there an advantage in having a sword requirement of 8 as opposed to 12?

Assuming you have 12 in swords?

No, As far as I know, low level requirement's only advantage is that you can use the weapon in full spec(dmg/energy/armor) with low level. With level lower than the requirement,the weapon spec will be lower than it stated but going higher than the requirement won't increase its max.
