I have two shields. One is an eternal shield with armor 16 and the other is a tall shield with armor 10 and -2 damage reduction.

The merchant will pay 55 gold for the eternal shield and 90 for the tall shield.

Can I assume that the tall shield is better for me because of what the merchant will offer or is that a very poor way to determine what is more potent?
