Ranger Pets
Hello There.
I want to make a ranger primary, with a pet. I am unsure what pet to get atm. I have a few questions: 1: Do pets help later on? Even if you have high/ max beastmastery? 2: I like to think as pets as a help in combat, what are there uses? Thanks Regards, Ashleigh. |

Well im pretty new to GW. But from my exp of having a pet as ranger, they are pretty usefull for battle. No other uses from what ive seen, other than keeping you company in creepy areas.

I used a pet through most of PvE. When i got closer to the end of the game, I realized that i just had much better use of my skillbar without it. So, feel free to use a pet. Later on you'll know whether or not to change your mind. There are also some interesting uses of pets in PvP.
As for what type of pet, the are practical differences, but very slight. Go for whatever pet you think is most cute.. or wicked.. or what have you. Last edited by galkraft; Sep 14, 2005 at 01:23 PM // 13:23.. |

I have been playing my Ranger/Warrior the most lately. I still have the first cat I got in the ranger quest. She's gotten bigger and my Beastmastery is set to 11 with major rune of beastmastery. She still dies from time to time but I am still experimenting with different skills for her.
As far as what pet. I think which ever pet you want as galkraft stated. I like the desert lizard but I am not there yet. And now that my cat is a lvl 20 I don't know if it will be worth the hassle of getting a new pet and lvling it up. On a side note, some animals get annoying with their crys/sounds. So that's another thing to consider. |

right now im using a pig and i like it. its just a extra DOT and it can help tank for a very short period of time. also in pvp it is just one more thing the others have to worry about. (im lvl 18 btw) also what makes them nice is they do more mana efficiant +dmg. like it does +15 dmg and heal it self for 36 and all that for 5 mana. for me to get +18 dmg i need to use 10 mana.

The thing you have to consider with pets is that once you start progressing further into the game, are you going to want Beastmastery as your primary build?
Further on in the game, Pet's become less effective unless you have separate skills for them as well as yourself. Best thing to do is progress through the game with a pet, then once it reaches lvl20, decide on what you want to specialise in. That way, even if you don't like the build you choose, you can always refund the attribute points and try a different build. |

I've utilized both combat ranger and pet ranger builds and I gotta tell ya, pets R0X0RS MAH B0X0RS...
The reason people dislike pets is because they'd rather make themselves useful rather than an entity from a distance. Pets should be treated like Remote Control Warriors. [with some lag involved] From what I've seen however, they now change targets a LOT faster than before the recent update, but they're still easily body blocked in some circumstances. If you want to use a pet, you MUST be prepared to make the sacrifice that is your own damage output. However, if you use the right secondary, the pet can be quite Godlike. [Mark of Pain? Balthasar's Aura anyone?] By bringing less skills for yourself, and making your pet 12 bm or higher, you'll be doing a LOT of damage and since most enemies ignore your pet, you can make them regret it quite readily... Your bow won't matter either because you won't be investing in Marksmanship if at all. If you went 16 BM, it's probably just fine since the pets crits [I think] and skill effects become quite godlike for their costs... [come on, a snare and speed skill for 12 energy total at 9 expertise? sign me up!] |

I am a 400K xp R with a pet snow wolf. He is a great tank and killer. He is often first targeted by baddies in PvE and often last to die. That is probably becasue he has at least as much xp as I do. He might not be as fast as some other pets, but he does great damage with each swipe of the paw.
One major drawback is they get in people's way at times. Members of my guild curse my wolf often. They just don't realize how much he helps keep them alive until he dies. Another drawback is you cannot pull. Pets will rush in and attack. The benefits to the group far outweigh the cons. The previous post mentions improvements to pets. Your pets become more responsive to you the more points you sink into Beast Mastery. That may be a large part of it. BTW, I am a R/N with Blood Magic maxed and used as if my primary, and Beast Mastery is 11 modified to 13. Those are the only skills I have points into. White Fang is low maintenance too so while he usually draw a crowd of bots I can focus on casting. With Druid's attire (for Necro energy), Beast Mastery Superior Rune, and Vigor Superior Rune, the build is incredible. My favorite so far. My Warrior/ Ranger just tamed a bear. He is gaining levels and can hold his own for a long time at 10th level. Yesterday I watched him kill a giant in the shiverpeak mountians. I am going to put some points into Beast Mastery someday... I think I have three right now. For some reason I don't get stuck on the bear as much as I did with the wolf, something to think about.

---------------------------------------------------- This is so wrong. I am not sure about this forum but the Ranger forum in www.gwonline.net has pretty much figured out everything that has to do with Pets. All Pets attack at about the same speed. The Birds may "seem" to attack faster only because of the attack animation. Some claimed that Bear's Brutal Strike is slower but I doubt that. All Pets should attack at the same speed and same damage. What makes Pet different is Damage Type and Evolution path. Bird, Lizard, Spider do Piercing Damage. We haven't tested this but Warrior's Shield Up may affect their damage since it's piercing. Wolf, Stalker, Bear do Slashing Damage. Warthog does Blunt Damage (based on the sound). Pets are only useful if you are devoted to them. Don't bring it if you don't have at least lvl 12 Beast Mastery and don't have any attack skills for it. Your pet will not do enough damage for you with that pathetic "normal attack". Call of Haste is almost a must for primary pet builds, unless you are going for Smiting Pet which means the pet does nothing but follow targets, or the recent IWAY build where the pets are supposed to die to benefit the warriors. I've been a pure Beast Master for over 2 months now and Pet build is the only build I've played so far. My experience tells me that Beast Mastery is for Warrior + Caster build. The reason is that the only elite skill in BM is Ferocious Strike. That skill is probably the best energy-battery skill in the game. For every 8s, you can probably leech back 9-10 energy and adds +25 damage on the target. Since beast masters don't really have rooms for self defense, their strength is to continously spam attacks which include Pet attacks (Ferocious Strike, Predator's Pounce and Disrupting Lunge are the best combo IMO). If you can keep spamming pet attack skills, Pet actually does better damage than a warrior in some cases. Many pet attack skills only have 5s recharge so if you bring 3 of them, you can spam really fast. While you are spamming pet attack skills, I suggest you use a wand/staff for more energy and choose a secondary class that has some nice spammable spells. Fireball/Immolate are great fit for PvE. Some suggestions are: R/Mo Smiting Pet: Balth Aura + Pet, Strength of Honor + Judge's Insight on Pet Healing Pet: Heal Party spam. No recharge so you can spam more often with Ferocious Strike. Or any healing spell that you want to spam. R/N Vampirc Gaze is the best fit IMO. You can do some decent shadow damage on the back while leeching health (since you have no rooms for self defense). I've been using this one for quite a while now. Very PvE friendly. In PvP, if you combo Weaken Armor + Enfeeable, you can even take down a warrior easily. But that's a bit extreme. lol R/E Fireball, Immolate, Firestorm. Or, bring Wards for great defense. I've been using Ward against melee in Sorrow because of the Knights. It benefits my weak henchies. hehe R/Me Empathy for warriors/rangers, Diversion/Backfire for casters. Pretty useful in random competition. In PvP, you must bring Disrupting Lunge. My usual set up is: For PvE Call of Haste, Call of Protection, Ferocious Strike, Predator's Pounce (the best skill), Charm Animal, Comfort Animal, Rez Sig and one of your secondary skills that is quite spammable. For PvP Call of Haste, Ferocious Strike, Disurpting Lunge and some secondary skills depending what class you want to fight against. Hope I've helped. Pets are decent but nowhere near dominating. They still suffer from bugs... like disappearence, getting stuck somewhere, not responding correctly..etc. Oh well, have fun. |

Remember, there is a quest from Aidan right after you go post-searing where he wants you to charm the only remaining Melandru's Stalker (or bring him one) to "replenish the population." So I kept my stalker from presearing, brought her to Aidan, then promptly took her to the tamer and later charmed a Moa Bird.
Moa starts out at level 5 I believe but leveled 4 times in the first 3 cooperative missions alone. She is on her way to catching up to me. |

Pets are a novelty unless you plan to REALLY, REALLY dedicate yourself to them in which case you have to be a clever little fellow/fellowina. Id recommend not using pets past yaks bend as waste of skill slots, waste of attrib points. They tend to become a giant liability in kryta with poison and the like.
If you do plan to specialise in pets....get a bear, UW spider or wolf. I have a desert lizard caleld giddy goanna, he's my novelty, he does sweet fark all dmg, if only he could become godzilla....*sigh* |

All pets are literally the same so you can get any pet you want. Don't worry about Pets having lower lvls than you do. They lvl up pretty quick and they can lvl up even if they are dead.
As for Evolution, Hearty pets are HUGE. They have +60 health (-2 damage) and are bigger in size. If you've seen a Hearty Moa Bird, you'll see what I mean! It's almost twice as tall as I am. Elder Pets are the most balanced one. No health penalty and enjoys +3 damage. You can train an Elder pet if you want, or else you can charm an UW Spider or lvl 15 Elder Wolf at Spearhead location. I've trained an Elder Warthog and I really like it. The only bad thing about Elder pets is that the size is quite small. I have a hard time seeing my pig during fights. lol My honest opinion is, ALL or NOTHING. You either devote to your pet or don't bring it at all. It's a waste of 2 skill slots (assuming you bring Comfort Animal). I've seen people who bring a Pet without Comfort Animal. WTF?? What a waste of skill slot. Try a full beast master and see if you like it. It takes time to control the pet but it's really fun. Pets DO NOT die easily. Don't listen to those who trash pets. Try it yourself with at least lvl 12 Beast Mastery. Bring Predator Pounce all the time in PvE so your pet can survive much better since each hit leechs back 41 health. Call of Protection is GREAT. Try it. Call of Haste is there to improve your pet's reaction speed and increase attack speed for a bit. Your pet should hit 5 more times in 30s with Call of Haste than without. The reaction speed is what matters to me. So your pick. Last edited by jibikao; Sep 15, 2005 at 05:55 PM // 17:55.. |
