Seeing that there is no best character, nobody can answer this question. All characters have their ups and downs, such as with the mesmer, they can stop people from attacking, but are targeted rather quickly and do not last long. Another is with the ele, they use skills requiring high amounts of energy, yet when this energy is used, the elementalists usually beome temporarily useless. Basically just do what a lot of people have done, create a build they think will work, and just go with it. The creators of Guild Wars have spared no time trying to balance all builds (and combo builds).
Edit: Would be nice if I could spell today -.- |

Well, one thing that you will soon learn about guild wars is that there are no "best" characters. There are characters that are better at certain situations than others. If I had to recommend a class to start with, I would recommend being a Warrior. Then when you pick up yopur second class, be a Monk. (Warrior/Monk) I'm told it's one of the easier classes to play. On the other hand, you could just do what I did and play many different class combinations until you find one that suits your style of play. It takes longer but in the end it's far more rewarding.

If you picture yourself in a loincloth crying "Crom!" you probably want a warrior.
If you picture yourself in green leotard hopping from tree to tree shouting, "Welcome to Sherwood Forest" you probably want to be a ranger. If you picture yourself calling the forces of nature to rain down upon your foes (like Moses in the 10 Commandments) you probably want to be an Elementalist If you're a goth you probably want to be a necro. If you like to be either ignored or the object of ridicule, be a Mesmer If you can manage a thankless job in keeping people alive and well - become a Monk |

Regardless of your choice, I recommend using a monk secondary. This will help you to make your way to the desert for ascension. After that, you can always switch your secondary profession in the desert outposts.
The downside of that approach is that you develop monk skills, even if you don't plan on using them later. |
