what the best mic/headset. need help buying - Guild Wars Forums

hi,

i'm thinking about buying a mic. idon't know much about them exp. whats dps and the average price of the item.

please post what specs would be best, your mic, price, and/or any helpful suggestions.

i have a windows 2000( not sure about anything else)

You do realize that Windows 2000 is a supported OS for Guild wars right? Just look at your box... "Minimum system Specifications: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP..."

i got a cheap $50 one if you wanna get one i wouldnt get them $10 ones i would get a proper gaming one which is about 120-50

I've got a Logitech XTreme (or some such variant on extremity), and while the sound-quality is passable for $25, and the mic. is good, they are a behind-the-ear sort of design, and the head-strap cuts into my ears after a while. XTremely uncomfortable.

"Best" is kinda subjective, of course, but Sennheiser makes some REALLY nice headset/mic combos (they'll even work on a computer witout a soundcard via USB, although I'm not sure how many people would actually use that adapter).

Anyway, Sennheiser are very well regarded for the quality of their microphones, as well as their headsets. Not everything they make is crazy-expensive either, so you might look into those..

You're correct in looking for a quality setup.
A cheap but functional set is awkward and uncomfortable - you don't want to use something like that over extended periods of time.

I have been using Plantronics for my gaming headsets for about 6-years.

My last set was the DSP-500 (digital headsets). I recently upgraded to the new GameCom Pro1 headsets, which are the follow-on of the DSP-500.

I love these headset for their outstanding sound quality and you do not have to have a sound card. I even take these headsets when I travel with my laptop.

They are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

I only spent $20 on my headset/mic and it works perfectly. It is cumfy and very solid.

I've tried Logitech, Altec Lansing, Plantronics, Cyber Acoustics, and some other, no name brands. Both Logitech headsets I've ever had (2 different behind the head, styles), were poorly constructed. The internal wires are thin and the soldering is usually garbage. So random speakers/mics will go out, with normal use. Some people get good batches, but I will never waste another penny on a Logitech headset. I tried a $40 Altec Lansing headset a few weeks ago. Very uncomfortable. Apparently, ears are supposed to be flat against your head. The mic was surprisingly good, though, but I took that thing back. Looking at the choices at my local retailers, Plantronics was my next best bet. Bought the Audio 90 because of a friends recommendation. So far, so good. Audio is fine. Not great, though. The mic isn't very good quality and the positioning doesn't give you much flexibility. The wires are also fairly thin so I do worry about them, but this headset is comfortable enough for me to put up with it until it finally decides to die on me.

Once that happens, I'm probably going to go with Sennheiser. I have a pair of HD280's that I've had for a couple of years. Great sound quality, but I don't want the headset version of that model because of all the audio isolation. I wouldn't be able to hear myself talking and I could end up talking very loudly. They have some open air headsets that I've been eying, though. Bottom line is, most local retailers sell low end garbage for the masses. They do it because it sells. If you have better retailers in your area, you are lucky. If not, try online retailers. You can get good quality for $40 - $70. I hope to buy my last headset, taking that route.

EDIT: Once you find one you think you might like, google it for online reviews. You may end up changing your mind, but it's for the best. Keep doing that until you're satisfied.

It all depends on how much you're willing to spend, and what type of headset/headphones you want.

Personally I use these, and the sound quality is seriously unbelievable (but you'll need a seperate microphone). Sennhesier HD 555

So if you're looking for a headset, as opposed to just uber headphones, I'd go with these: Sennheiser PC 155 or Plantronics DSP 500

Sennheiser is my favorite tho

Good tips, but I must say, the USB models are not always necessary. You can save quite a bit by going with the normal, analog models. It just comes down to how good your audio output is, and whether you're willing to pay to boost it for a mere headset.

Case and point. Here, you can buy a Sennheiser PC 150 for $60 less than the the site you linked to (that had the USB version). I don't quite trust USB headsets yet and I wouldn't expect the average person to shell out quite a bit more money for such a thing. I'd rather spend my money on a better sound card. Or not at all, but maybe that's just me

if you are not an audiophile or anything like that, dont worry too much about trying to find an highend headset.
I have had $100 heads and had a roommate with $350 headphones that i cannot justify over my $30 headphones with a $10 headset i wear around my neck and just use the mic.... works perfectly.

Ive used logitech, plantronics and now my current headset is the Sennheiser PC155's USB. These are by far the nest headphones ive used. And i love the USB connection it allows me to instantly plug them in to the front of my case when i need them or if i want to listen to something thru my speakers I just pull the plug.

Their a little pricey but they are by far the best sounding, most confortable headset ive owned.

thanks for all the help. there is still the question of sensitivity. some sets i see has a sensivtivity with -38 db and others with -56. so how does this affect the soundquality or what it actually means?
