The Southers Shiverpeaks chests as mentions are easy to get to from port sledge and can net you some good items. I happened to get lucky and get a really good staff for my monk out of one, and a really good wingblade sword out of another one, but they have been pretty much hit or miss. they seem to drop more caster stuff than anything for me anyway. Yes i have farmed and sold some good drops so i have money in the game, but i always try to keep about 3 keys on me for whatever area i go into.

I never buy keys, theyre a waste of money even using my tip for getting the golds. The fact is even golds from chests are usually either rubbish or for the wrong profession type. If I find a key I either weigh up whether or not to sell it or use it next time the chance arises incase I find a nice item or rune. I have found most of my best golds from drops than in chests.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST STRATEGY CONCERNING KEYS:

Buy 1 before you go into FoW, UW. Go with the group, collect your Ecto, Shards. When you eventually find a chest; DO NOT USE YOUR KEY! Sell it do the dirty key junky who's dirty key lust has hasn't been satiated by that Rare Grim Cesta. If you wait til the 2nd chest, when most people have used their keys, you might even be able to have an in-game auction, selling you key to the highest dirty-key-junky bidder. I've made several platinum feeding dirty key junkies their dirty drugs.

Make some money... Become a dealer!!

I got a Gold Max dmg swamp club out of a shiverpeak box in the last shiverpeak mission last night which i promptly sold for 15k so sometimes it pays well to open those things up

I am a "dirty key junkie"
FoW chests drop good things sometimes, i say they are the best, but rarely.

I've gotten quite good at locating chests. I go to FoW solo, with my W/Mo,
usually bring at least 2 keys. to the post who said there are only 2 chests in FoW is full o crap, ive been where Ive seen 3 numerous times. Anyway, solo FoW runnin around, mobs do NOT chase very far. If you see a chest you open it, now sometimes you get purple and that sucks, and since your alone you cant have someone else open the chest. So you just suck it up and waste 1400 gold. It's actually quite fun to solo. if you dont believe me for whatever reason here are some screens. 1 is with my w/mo as a w/r (Before i switched to w/mo, which is easier)
this is a chest you DO NOT EVER WANT TO OPEN, if there are ppl in a party let one of them open it, ALWAYS is PURPLE. I've opened maybe 10 chests in this location. if you dont know where it is, look ahead of me the path leads to
the desert part of FoW. this screen is when i just started my runs:

if fow has the best chest, there is a major problem. on my last run, i found 3 obsidian chests(i only had 2 keys =/) and here is what i got.one req 12 holy rod with 7% improved casting speed. the other chest gave me a req 13 warhammer with 18<50. thats sure seems like 3k well spent.

Well, I did find an extremely easy way to get chests. I would be getting about 30 an hour (this is with shiverpeaks). I highly recommend that you DON'T farm shiverpeak chests anymore because the drops got nerfed. I would go to Deldrimor War Camp and keep entering and exiting until there was a chest right next to the portal (just down the slope or up the top to the right) and would run down, open it and run back. Well, the first 30 keys I bought i got golds about 22/30 times. Bought 10 more keys a few days later and got 1/10 golds. I'm pretty sure it has been nerfed, because gold drops were quite frequent for me..
