Quick question on framerate
Just downloaded fraps to check out the framerate on GW.. on 1/3 quality it's about 25 and at full quality it's 23. Just curious as to whether these are decent numbers so that I know what the best setting are for my graphics. Thanks.

You must have a slow computer to get low fps like that..
I sit on 60 average with everything set high, except shadows, and no AA.. it usually only ever drop's into the 50's when there are a lot of critters on the screen doing skills.. If I stick AA on my fps drops down to an average of ~45 or so.. same goes with shadows.. if I stick them both on I drop to an average of ~35 or so fps.. (btw, whats limiting my fps is not my cpu or video card, but the crappy 14" monitor I have that can't handle more than that ) BTW, I don't trust FRAPS at all. It was telling me I was getting a max of 30 fps in GW when the GW in-game fps counter was saying I was getting 60.. and the look & feel & responsiveness of the images/game was of 60 fps and not 30 fps.. and yes, you can tell the difference when you have a number of critters and effect's going off.. So I'd advise sticking -perf at the end of your GW shortcut loader.. Right-click on it and select "Properties".. in the Target box you'll see the link to the GW.exe file there.. in quote's.. after the quotes put in a space and then -perf .. this will show the fps in-game.. and IMO it's a whole lot more accurate than FRAPS is. As for whats "good" - try playing it at the different settings and see what your comfy playing at. I remember on my old comp I used to shock my flatmate when i played Morrowind.. I was playing with 5-6 fps! and I was happy doing so... now, I'd die trying to play it that slow.. hehehe.. but with the comp I had back then, that was excellent fps for me! hehehe.. and I found it playable enough for my like's.. So in the end, what everyone else might find unplayable (ie 23-25 fps) you might find perfectly playable for yourself. So basically try the setting out and find what gives you a mix of performance and looks that you could play with and stick with it. |

In a game like Guildwars it's going to be changing all the time, somewhere like lions arch i would expect most peoples FPS to drop heavily compared to somewhere like Beetletun where you're less likely to have 30-50 players running around.
You really just need to see what feels good while playing, people take too much notice of FPS counters i find when they didn't notice anything wrong performance wise till it said 25 and then they start playing with settings. |

I find MMO's and such can be played at 20fps...
FPS games should be played at 60fps. 20 is fine if you dont mind. A lot of movies are at 24, I think. |

FPS in movies is another story.
Don't use FRAPS to know your FPS. Use the one of guildwars which is way more accurate simply because it have been coded within the game and it's not a third-party (fraps..) prog. |

I've always found it amusing to see the comments about modern fps'ers.. like "The game looks great at max setting! great job.. then I turned everything off and to min setting's for best fps..".. It's always amused me to see game companies put out these lovely looking and sounding games.. just to have the "mainstream" players of those games turn everything off/down to get the best performance.. LOL (I know why they do it, it's still amusing) Quote:
But in the end - find a mix of performance and quality that you can play with and play at that. Ignore fps and such nonsense really.. unless your a die-hard gamer who absolutely has to have the best fps ever... find whats playable and enjoyable for you and stick with it |
