SO I've been playing GW for 2 days in uh... "RolePlaying Mode" And its been neat. But I have no idea what I'm doing. I hear all this stuff about world championships and all this jazz and PvP guild recruiting and all that.

I dont know anyone who plays the game and I have been browsing the forums and still can't quite figure out it.

Do I just play RPG mode until I'm... some level? And then...?

Basicly I think I expressed the confusion pretty well. GW seems cool but wtf am I doing?

Just keep on enjoying the Role-Playing side, complete the missions, learn your character role. Basically, for Player v Player mode [PvP] you need to unlock items and skills, and the easiest way to do that is by doing exactly what you are doing right now. Don't stop.

Do ALL the quests for your RPG character and get all the skills you can.
Do NOT buy skills from skill venders.
Do STAY with roleplaying.

You can get collector weapons for monster drops instead of having to worry about buying "max gold" weapons and focus for very nice weapons.

Try to keep 5 of each monster drop (that you can use salavage kit on to turn in to crafting stuff). Keep an eye out for an npc trader in towns and out in the explore zones. He will swap you the monster drop items (each trader once only one type) for a very nice weapon/focus/shield,etc.

Once you move on to the next region, you can dump the monster drop items from the previous region and start collecting the new ones.

have said play thorugh the storyline, get the skills and experience. Join a good guild that will help you along.

Continue doing Missions and Quests (especially ones where you can get new skills). It is ok to buy skills from skill vendors. However, as a rule of thumb, all skills that can be bought in main towns (like Ascalon City, Yak's Bend, Lion's Arch, etc.) can also be found as quest rewards and should only be bought as a last resort.

If you want to do some PvP, then you can take your Roleplaying character to the Ascalon Arena in Ascalon City (levels 1 - 10) or the Shiverpeak Arena in Yak's Bend (levels 1 - 15). These two arenas are a good way to dip your toes in PvP (although sometimes people take their low level characters and give them high level armor to compete in these arenas).

Once you get to Lion's Arch, you can access the Battle Isles, which has all the main PvP areas. It is not recommended that you do any PvP here unless you are level 20. So, if you level past the Shiverpeak Arena and want to PvP, make a new PvP-only character. That character will have access to all the runes, skills, and weapon upgrades that you've unlocked with your Roleplaying character.

Also, PvP characters start out in the PvP tutorial area. It's a good place to go if you want to learn more about PvP. I would definitely recommend it if you are interested in PvP.

If we change the word "sometimes" to "constantly" and point out that they also bring overpowered elite skills with them, yes.

I'd avoid the low level arenas, unless you can take a thrashing and walk off smiling. It takes a thick skin to get pounded by people having a huge edge in skills and gear, not to mention experience,and not get turned off it. PvP is fun, but it's probably better to have more experience, and to do it with a PvP character first in Competition Arenas, to get a feel for it with level 20 characters and maxed gear - sure, you won't have all unlocks, but at least you'll have the same armour rating and the same weapon damage, and by working a pre-made PvP character into the build you even get an elite skill.

And if you are still in pre-searing, find somebody who's doing the same quests as you and will be online at same times as you..... I always seem to pick up a buddy there with whom I play thru the entire game.

Good advice on the whole!

Check out guildwiki.org It's the best single site for game info. gamepressure.com has the best maps. This site rocks in general.

One thing I disagree with -- and it's why I mentioned guildwiki -- there are a few skills you can NOT get through quests, beyond the elites. So those should perhaps be bought. For example, for an elementalist, I think both Immolate and Phoenix are spells you can only buy. They're in Grendich Courthouse.

Well, technically, you can eventually use capture signets to get non-elite skills, and buying one of those costs exactly as much as buying the same skill. But that's only an issue for you after you get to Lion's Arch, the place you first get capture signets, and that will take a little while.

I have not played my Guild Wars account in some time now, I just recently installed the game from my cds, and the client also updated to the factions event client. I was wondering: Is there still anyway to play the basic game, instead of playing the PvP event? Honestly, I just want to play the game.. yet it is not letting me do it, due to this PvP event that they have going on. Please help!

The only thing I can think of is, did you use one of the free keys provided for the free weekend, if you did you didnt need too, and maybe that is the reason, if not Im at a loss. I am still relativelty new to the game tho, so perhaps a veteran will help you out.

create new character get sent straight to presear and play the game.

if you have characters still on your account accept the updates choose character, and play.

you have to travel to get to the event on purpose.

if for some reason you start on the battle isles simply hit map the boat for transportation to lions arch and then it is up to you

I used to play FFXI and am familiar with the nature of online MMORPG communities, there are the good and the bad and the crappy of course

Any suggestions?

I played for 3 hours before work today... having fun. Pretty game too.

I guess you just have to jump in a guild. It doesn't cost anything (if it does, you probably don't want to join them :P), and I'm sure you'll get plenty of invites as you group with people for missions. You can leave whenever you like.

dont join any guild that is spamming 'New Guild Recruiting, we have a cool cape and almost a guild hall!!'

just find some people that you mesh with and add them to your friends list...then see if their guild is going in the direction you want, be it pve, pvp, or both

our guild took a break from tombs farming tonight to help guildies thru missions...its pretty quick with a full team of level 20's that have all the skills and can build a team for the specific mission....we owned in D'Alessio, I thought we were just at the halftime cutscene but we were done, lol
