Bumping a topic?
What's it mean or do when someone bumps a topic?

Forum threads drop down in the list over time, because newly posted threads come up to the top. If a thread sees no activity over a period of time, it will disappear from the first page, thus lowering the chances that anybody will see it again.
When you post a reply to such a thread with the sole purpose of getting it back to the front page, it is called a topic bump. Sometimes people do it because they asked a question but did not receive an answer until the thread was pushed back to second (third...) page in too little a time for anybody to notice. Bumping up very old threads or those that revolve around what is commonly called "beating the dead horse" (i.e. arguing back and forth on a fruitless subject) is considered bad forum etiquette and is frowned upon. |
