Where did all the steel go?
Last 3 days I have attempted to purchase steel from the the rare materials trader, and have received the msg: "That item is currently out of stock" (paraphrased) It then prompts me to buy Dildremor steel instead.
Now the price for the steel itself is ridiculous last time it was 370, and I was willing to pay but I still got the out of stock msg. The price for dildremor steel is at 700, and I don't need it, and the price is ridiculous to boot. Anyone else having this problem? Does this happen often? I always thought the traders had an unlimited supply of these materials and prices fluxated based on amount being purchased and sold at the traders...now I am starting to think ppl are some how hoarding these materials and are effecting the prices. If that is the case, this is simply ridiculous, I need these materials to craft better armor....Anet what gives? |

Alot of the canthan armor uses it, then add many hundreds of thousands wanting armor + limited supply = none or high price. Easyest way to get steel now is to simply craft it. its about the same price in the end as well. The situation does need fixing tho.

Yeah I guess I will have to craft it, but that means I am going to have to farm charcoal -- not that I can't do that with some of my toons, it's just time consuming....And, contrary to others who prefer to farm and craft to save a few gp, I find farming to be very unenjoyable. I rather spend the gold and play the game....I just think buying Dildremor steel at 700+ gold, to craft items that require regular steel is a sham....
This stinks... |

It seems the devs simply didnt expect the demand, tho how I dont know. The devs will either let it rebalance which will take a month or so or increase the drops of rare items. Itll fix itself in time. After all, when GW:P launched there were no NPCs selling this kinda stuff so this is a lesson for the future.

As i said I was willing to pay 370 which was the listed price. But when I went to purchase it the trader said "That item is currently out of stock"... That means Anet has placed a cap on quantity of steel available...And that is something I think needs fixing. It seems as though you didn't read the thread all that thoroughly... |

And it's not as if there is no steel being released into the game, it's just that there are so many people constantly hitting the trader and buying what is available that it seems as if there isn't any at all. |

70-100g (10 wood) 80-120g (10 iron) 210 gold = 360-430g for 1 steel. Makes sense |

I R SELLING STEEL FOR 500 gold each LoL Opportunistic traders will make a killing on these shortages. With items out of stock they can charge an inflated price and still get it which in turn sets the stage for a price cap amongst traders. I'll probably sell what I've got banked up for about 400 maybe less if they buy it all. reasonable prices in times of shortage I think. I knew this would happen. I've been banking up crafting materials for months prior to the release. I even made a post on here about how prices would spike on crafting goods. I was absolutely right.

Just salvage everything, especially blue items you won't use. You can get the steel you need for a 1.5k suit of armor fairly quickly.(12+8+4+4=28 IIRC)

To all of the ppl on this thread who think I don't understand the concept of supply and demand, I do, I think you missed my point. Considering that this was a game and not RL I assumed that the rate at which steel was purchased and sold would effect the price at the Traders (thus supply and demand). But I never thought that it would be as realistic as to runnout of stock on an item. I mean come on. Part of the joys of a playing a game is taking advantage of upgrading armor and weapons etc. Now to accomplish this task, I must go about crafting these components or get shanghai'd by someone who has stockpiled the item. I rather pay an overinflated price to a rare material trader, but I don't even have that option because it is completely out of stock. As for crafting the steel, I now have to farm the components, which means wasting time to me. Like I previously said, I find farming unenjoyable, thus the term "farming". Now you say I should just pay a hefty penny to someone that is selling the material? What if I am too poor to do that, once again, I must now farm for gold, what a waste of time. I simply think it is poor judgement on Anets part to allow an item to go out of stock. Actually i think it is simply irresponsible. Especially with the recent release of Factions and so many new players onboard, why should they have to suffer a shortage of item availability? Expensive prices is one thing, no stock, that's another.
That is my oppinion, that doesn't reflect my comprehension of supply and demand. |

Well, it's supply and demand, it went into everyone's new armor. You could buy one of the other types of armor if the material is easier to get. The armor requiring leather is nice since it's so easy to craft (assuming you already have the tanned hides). Other than that, either find a way around it or find a way to profit from the spike in demand.

You have 4 options: 1. Buy it from someone who has some stored up for whatever reason. 2. Salvage it from drops. 3. Craft it from materials you salvaged from drops. 4. Wait a week or so and the materials trader will likely have more. With all the people buying it (or wanting to buy it), you think the price from the trader would be much different? You would be paying a pretty penny any way you did it. Good luck |
