Now that Factions is out, why play the core game?
Hi, as somebody who has the original Guild Wars game, but never got a character above lvl 15 (I just don't play it very often), I'm concerned that with Factions there will start to be fewer and fewer people playing the core game.
Since Factions gives you the original 6 chararcter types, what incentive to people have to play the core game? I know Factions gives the original 6 character types 25 new skills each, but does it also give them the core 50? Are there things that you can only get in the core game that you can't get in Factions? Is the idea that people will mostly move along with the expansions, and the older ones will "die off" over time? For example, in a year with the contenent that the core game takes place on be mostly empty? Or will there be valid reasons to go there? i.e why would somebody that just bought Factions want to buy the core game? |

There's some Prophecies only skills that are only in Tyria. Also, there doesn't seem to be many skill quests in Cantha, so people might save their skill points and venture back to Tyria to pick up some of the free skills.

Because it´s much cooler when you have a char that has completed ALL...prophecies AND factions |

1) farming for gold/materials in the core game because i have no clue where to farm in factions.
2) Brother and friends don't play much and factions is a waste of money for them. So we play the core together. |

my concern...
Well my story is that I have not completed the core campaign. I am at lvl 15. My concern is that most people will be moving to factions, leaving me with a smaller pool of people to play with to get to ascention. It sounds like this will be the case, at least partially. I think ArenaNet should have given players more incentive to play (or buy) the core game. Elite skills are good, but generally for the more hardcore. And getting skills through quests is a really good way. Is it true that you can get all 300 skills from the core came if you only own Factions, if you buy them all? I think a good thing would be to make those skills either only available if you had the core game, or only a portion buyable.
That's just my 2c. |

Actually, what I would expect to happen over the few months is to see the price of Guild Wars:Prophecies to start dropping, as it's been at $49.99 SRP since it's release. Dropping the price of Prophecies would get new players involved in GW, which in theory could lead to additional sales of Factions.
Personally, I still plan on spending quite a bit of time over in Chapter One, as I still have one character left who has not ascended, one character who has not finished all the missions, I still have to do all of the Glint quests, my favorite farming spots are still over there, not all of my guildmates have Factions yet, etc..........Plenty of reasons to still play in Tyria. Also keep in mind, that I believe GW has sold over a million copies. That's alot of players. Did 100% of them go and buy Factions right away? Probably not. I think the player base for Prophecies will be just fine for the short term. Now over Chapter 24 comes out it might be a different story |

Factions is nothing else then repackaged core game...
Arena net just want to make money, from core we have 4 char they have 6... next game will have 8.. skip one year and there you will have all 8 char in next game...till then you will finished Tyria map several times. I know many MANY players, and more then half of them dont think to buy factions at all. Because of that dont be scared that old gw will remain without newbies. |

Honestly I have been less than impressed with Factions so far. It seems so much shorter and less a complete game. Once you finish it, there doesn't seem to be that much more to want to do except do it again to get the rest of the greens/armor/ etc.
There are the Elite missions and challenge missions and fighting for faction. But I suspect that once I finish the game with my Ritualist and Assasin and other tyrians I will be spending my time back in tyria. |

Don't worry about nobody playing Prophecies. Factions seems to have limited replay value, so I suspect that once people have blown through it with a couple of characters, they'll be back playing in Tyria again, either with Tyrian characters, or ones they've brought over from Cantha. Especially those who mainly PvE.
The drag being, of course, that in order to play a Ritualist or Assassin in Tyria, you have to go through all the Factions content first. Can't create one and just jump into Prophecies. That'll be the only reason I play Factions from the beginning once I've gone through it a couple of times. |

There are armor styles you can't get in Factions that are in pre.
There are skills for the core class's that faction's doesn't have. Easy to go to farming spots for material you need (and are in high demand) then trying to find them in C2. More places (c1/c2) moving around the map if you like to farm to not farm "too" much in one spot Not everyone is going to buy C2 There should be a spike in sales / accounts when C1 get priced at the $19.99 that all software one day reach in the bargin bins A few days in factions, seen the population go from vacant to decent again. |
