start a new character in factions, or prophecies?
I own both Prophecies and Factions. If I want to start a new Warrior/Monk, which should I use? I think it's easier to get to lvl 20 with Factions, and you don't have to go through pre-searing. So what's the best way?

If you start in Cantha you will get alot more XP per playing time than you will with Prophecies. Buying skills isn't much of an issue because in around 2-3 hours of playing time in Cantha I had a N/Rt that was lvl 12 with almost 3 plat. Now if I had played in Prophecies I would definitely would not have as much money and I wouldn't have as much XP since all Canthan quests I have run across so far are like 1500-4000xp + gold.
However, as a previous poster stated you will not come across many quests that offer skills as rewards. The one thing I did to get as many skills as possible (and XP) was do all the secondary profession quests. It takes a bit of time but the XP and money are worth it for creating a new character in Cantha. |

how do skills work in factions?
So how do you get skills in Factions? Is it like Prophcies, where you mostly get them from quests? Or do you buy them? I'd assume since Factions is stand alone, Warriors can get alot of skills via quests.
Also, what happens when your W/R that you create in Factions gets to go to Tyria? Can you then do the warrior and ranger quests to get skills for "free"? |

From what I've seen so far in Factions, you buy your skills from the skill trainers. I have a level 16 assassin and a level 12 necro in Factions and I have yet to see even one single quest that offered a skill as a reward. You are given skills by the headmasters of your chosen profession and secondary profession so you at least have something to start out with. I am assuming I will be able to go to Tyria and be able to do the skill quests, can anyone verify?

I'd probably recommend starting in tyria, cantha is really low lvl friendly at all, plus its easy to get lvled and get ran from place to place fast in tyria

Make your new character in Cantha. You have a choice of 8 professions. You will lvl up faster and ascend faster. You dont have to wait 'til near endgame to get Charge, 100blades...etc.
The cost of skills does get steep, but if you know what you need, you shouldnt have any problems. Pick up everything and merchant the junk. |

I'd recommend starting in Cantha, just because I find the starter island more interesting than pre-searing. However, sure you can get elites earlier, but the pool of regular skills available to you is poorer, even if you buy them all. My ranger despairs over her pet because she hasn't yet been able to buy any good skills for healing her pet (yeah, comfort animal is there, but there are better ones). So her pet dies a lot, unfortunately. My level 20 rangers in Tyria have much better skills at their disposal. |

In Cantha, it looks like you can only buy core skills and Factions skills--makes sense. If you want Prophecies skills, you have to go over to Tyria to get them. Both my ranger and my mesmer just made flying visits to Lion's Arch, and all the unlocked Prophecies skills are available there. It turns out Wastrel's Worry isn't a core skill, and neither are most of the skills that help to heal a pet (that aren't elites). But I've got them now. I hadn't gone over before because I didn't want to break out of the Canthan storyline with those two, but in the ranger's case in particular, I really missed things like Call of Protection.
