Smile Good 2nd profession for monk?

Ello,

I am a female monk and my level is 2. I have just started the game and I'm keen to know which profession is most suited for farming, and working in teams.

My monk will be used to protect the teams venturing into quests and missions. So my questions are:

1. Which class/build is best as 2nd profession.
2. What type of monks are there, I have hard of protectors and healers.

Thanks.

Uh, I'd say either Necromancer or Mesmer for energy management. Most would take Mesmer because there isn't really as much of a drawback from the skill Mantra of Recall (or was it recovery? I havn't played for too long o.o).

Monks. Now there are Healers, Protectors, and Smiters.

Healers basically heal teammates with simple 5 energy cost spells.

Protectors either cast protection spells to keep party members from taking too much damage, or they can use a skill called Divine Boon to protect and heal.

Smiters, well, they do damage. Not very players go down this path for PvE >_>

Hello, warpy.
There are basically 5 types.
Boon/prot who are basically healers and protectors in one
Smiters, the offencive line of monks
Healers who.....heal
Bonders whos use life bond/barrier to focus on a few certian partymembers
and Protection monks, who focus on not so much healing, as leddening the damage partymembers take.

Secondary classes: My favorite is mesmer, the most popular are necros and mesmers, followed by warrior.

For Farming, read here. http://guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3040987

Mesmer or necro. I was originally a Mo/N.. but changed to mesmer and found it more useful.

Mo/W is usually for 55 farmers, not for a monk planning on keeping people alive.

I went Mo/E and I've been pretty happy with it. Armor of Earth (or Kinetic Armor on some builds) to greatly reduce damage taken to myself, various Wards available to help protect the party, and I can also use various Glyphs (particularly Glyph of Lesser Energy) for utility.

But Mesmer is the most common, for energy management. My builds rely on using energy very efficiently, rather than getting a lot of it, but I keep getting comments from allies that I'm a really good healer, so I suppose I must be doing OK.

By the way - no one mentioned it doesnt really matter that much. Once you get a certain distance into the game (generally you will hit the level 20 cap just before you hit this point), you can change your secondary as much as you want so you can try all sorts of different combinations.

The game is not designed to run up to level 20 and stop; it really just starts getting interesting at higher levels as you can vary yourself and your strategies so much.

Yeah. Most of the time it doesn't matter what secondary I have and I hardly ever run into energy problems. Really it's just whatever you want. People doing Mo/N are probably in it for the elite Offering of Blood, which isn't available to a low level monk anyway. When starting, I did Mo/W, because I wanted Sprint (turned out to be quite useful when things went badly). However, that's the ONLY warrior skill I ever took as a healer/protector.

I think that to be very effective with a secondary (as well as doing what people expect of you, healing), you have to be high level. Whatever works best for you is perfectly fine.

I like the idea of healing only or healing and smiting. My main aim is to keep my party members alive.

Often a mixture of protection and healing is best at that, especially in high level areas where you simply cannot keep up with the raw damage that the enemies inflict with only healing skills. I nearly always bring Protective Spirit myself - it's one of the most useful spells ever. Should be almost worthy of elite status IMO, but I'm glad it's not.

monk/me is really common not just for MoR but there other skills that can keep your energy up and they are not elites

like:energy tap power drain spirit of failure drain enchantment,CHANNELING,insipered encahntment, shame and more

in insipiration magic they are and otehr useful skills that a monk can have

like: psychal resistance, elementalist resistance, hex breaker, mantra of inscription?(the one that make your signets recharge faster)

if you want to see the full description of those skills just make a pvp character go to a priest of balthazar and see the full description

i think mesmers is way more useful than anything else as a secondary profession to a monk

i say MO/ME as they have more energy management skills than the necro (who has only 1, near the endof the game, by which time you can change your second prof anyway)

mesmer has good energy skills, but my mo/me always ends up with pure monk skills, so for me, any second proff would had done

Do you have Factions of Prophecies?
Everything said here is good, but bear in mind that you can't get Mantra of Recall if you don't have Prophecies; nor can you get Offering of Blood.
You are still probably best to go Me or N, but you'll have to look for other skill options if you lack access to Tyria.

I don't have Factions. I hear there is a new GW on the horizon?

Monks normally go "pure" but there are some builds that will use skills from their secondary proffessions as well. Mesmer is probably your best bet.

Factions is the latest release (came out at the end of April). There's another chapter due out this fall - release date hasn't been announced yet. (PvP preview this weekend!)

If you had factions, I'd say go with ritualist secondary just because ritualist has some healing skills, but since you have prophecies, I say any secondary. I doubt you will really use any secondary unless that secondary also has healing, unless you try being a smiter(which I don't recomend because basically everyone only accepts healing or prot monks into thier group). You might need a secondary that helps with energy management at first, but later on, i doubt you'll have any trouble with energy.

Same here. Mo/Me Boon Prot works quite well in PVE

Yes. Actually I've found mesmer to be the most useful secondary profession for most professions. I now have Mo/Me, R/Me and E/Me. My Warrior also occasionally goes W/Me, although he prefers to be a W/Mo or W/R.

I don't know what it is about mesmers that makes them good for secondaries, they just seem to have skills that complement every class.
