Alright if Im level 20 with a level five pet and I fight things that give me 0 exp does the pet still gain exp being he is a much lower level?

Yes it does, at least my pheonix kept gaining xp until it was as much higher level as i stopped getting xp at

It even gets XP if it's dead.

Well usually does. Sometimes they dont, they only gain XP when they are in range if they are dead i do believe.

Yes i think the same rule applies to your pet, it can be level 5 and be fighting lvl 9's with you, you being lvl 20 wont get exp , but he will. ( i think the limit is 5 lvls up or down)

And yes it gets exp if its in range,otherwise it doesnt.
