As someone who used to play WoW, I'll say that the PvE is probably not as good content wise, even though the grind aspect of PvE is reduced, as well as the whole "uberloot" thing, at least in terms of stats has been eliminated.
The PvP on the other hand, is absolutly amazing. It's like Chess(strategy wise), but with a Team. If you're a fan of FPS or RTS games, you'll absolutly love Guild Wars PvP. I suggest if you want to know more about Guild Wars PvP, you hop over to the PvP fourms here(Gladiator's Arena). The depth of the PvE is not as good as WoW(No other game really competes with WoW in that regard), but the depth of the strategy and skill required in the PvP aspect of the game is far superior to that of World of Warcraft. Yes there are Guilds in Guild Wars. There are a ton of good PvE guilds out there, and a bunch of good PvP guilds out there too. |

For some people, it may get boring. I've been playing for 16 (or is it 17) months and I haven't gotten bored yet. The Demo covers only a small taste of what GW has to offer have fun with it! Yep, there are guilds (thousands) to join, there's several different types of PvP games, including 4v4 random arenas where you're just tossed in with whoever, 4v4 team arenas where you pick your teammates, 8vs8 Guild battles and Hero's Ascent Battles. There's a ton of strategy & team builds that people use in the 8v8 type battles.
The grind in GW is much less than WoW, as the level cap is set at 20, which is where the real fun begins. The idea for the low cap is that a character's success should be based on skill, not level. If you do decide to get the game, I'd suggest you start with Nightfall - coming out next month, or Prophecies (the original GW). They're much friendlier to new players than factions is. |

I play both WoW and Guild Wars, played WoW for about 8 months, and GW for over a year.
Guild Wars is very different to most online RPGs, its world isn't persistant, instead every area outside an outpost is instanced for your group, this is great in the way that you aren't disturbed whilst playing, it also allows you to travel to any town via the map in an instant which is really convenient - on the flipside of this it can make the map feel less worldly and unpopulated. The game also uses a unique battle system based almost entirely around skills - it's devastatingly simple at first glance, but perfecting your skill build is difficult and also really fun. Guild Wars isn't really dependant on gear to a certain extent, while items do vary, they don't vary in a way that 1 piece is clearly superior to the other, just that certain weapons/armour are suited to different play styles. PvE in Guild Wars is really fun and fast paced, although it is very linear - if you are coming from WoW then you know that it offers alot of choice in which quests you want to do and which areas you want to explore, Guild Wars employs a more linear storyline in which you have to follow to a certain degree - while this ensures you will never get lost - it can sometimes suck 3rd and 4th time around Also Guild Wars doesn't have much in the way of raiding/end-game content at the moment, so once you finish up your quests, you'll probably go onto PvP, re-roll a different class, or help others. Then there is PvP, and my is it awesome and varied, easily the best PvP ever - GW's skill based setup ensures that time spent does not equal power. There are many different types of PvP: Random Arenas: You are grouped randomly with 3 others and fight another team in fast paced gladiator style battles. Team Arenas: Like the above except you choose your team players. Hero's Ascent: Fight in teams of 8 in the ongoing Tournament to gain fame and ranks, and claim the favour of the gods for your RL country/region (favour allows certain PvE areas to become available to your region). Guild Vs. Guild: 2 Guilds battle it out to climb the Guild ladder and increase in rank. Alliance Battles: (GW:Factions exclusive)- my favourite, choose to fight for the Kurzicks or the luxons in a 12 vs. 12 flag capturing large scale battle to push the battle lines across the world of cantha and claim PvE outposts for your Faction, the AB map changes as one side pushes the other back/forward. Competitive Missions (Factions Only), large scale battles involving skirmishes, bombarding, flag capping and material collecting. As you can see PvP is much more varied than WoW, and Guild Wars is worth a purchase purely on that basis, although you may not find the PvE to your taste if you like super-geeky stats, armour, and weapons. This site has good pvp articles.
Use www.guildwiki.org for more info, but don't trust the pvp builds they post. |

Since you are trying to quit World Of Warcraft without the influence of Guildwars, you should hang up the gaming cards, cancel your credit card outgoing and use the savings from the subscription to buy Guildwars Prophicies. You can pick it up for under £15 now, and it is worth every penny. I recommend you buy either Prophicies or Nightfall, because Factions doesn't give you the learning curve of the other two and getting to grips of the game mechanics is a lot harder apparently.

PVP wise there is Random Arenas, 2 teams of 4 randomly created. Team Arenas, 2 teams of 4 put together by the players. Hall Of Heroes, a tournament for parties/guilds of 8 to rise higher in the torney ladder and win the HoH. Guildbattles, pretty much does what it says on the tin, 2 guilds fighting each other. Alliance Battles, 2 teams of 12 from each alliance (Luxon or Kurzick) battle each other. Personally I haven't done Guild Battles for over 10 months. They were pretty involved, holding the flag for morale boosts, capping catapults etc. However, the Guild VS Guild selection is random, but it does try to narrow down the difference in your guilds ranking. LOTR onlin or Darkfall are 2 games I've never heard of untul now . Last edited by Taurohtar; Sep 24, 2006 at 11:10 AM // 11:10.. |
