There was supposed to be an area where a player could take 3 heroes and take another team of the same on head to head. Did this get implemented? Do i have to unlock it?

yes unlock it.... go to Great temple of balthazar then u will get another hero unlock and access... at least that was what i did.

There's a Priest of Balthazar in the center fountain thing. Talk to him to get your first 3 Heroes. That unlocks Hero Battles for you.

hmm ... i've approx 10 heroes , but can't find it

the priest only offers to unlock heroes , i miss only the 2 not chosen in the storyline
