In Chapter 1, the orginal, You actually start off "two years ago" in the time line.

The "Newbie training area" is Ascalon as it was 2 years ago. But shortly aferwards the Charr invaded from the north in an event called the Searing. Thats why the Ascalonian region is so barren in the game.

After your training you are taken via a cutscene to present day Ascalon where you start the bulk of the game.

Ascalon before this cutscene is "Pre-searing" and afterwards is "Post-Searing".
