I assume the most obvious reason is because prophecies being the first game sets up the storyline.
When I finish prophecies (After 7 months) i'll tell you if it was worth it :P |

Prophecies isn't a game you will finish in 2 days like some people did with Factions and NF.

Hi,
I am greatly enjoying going through Prophecies atm. I've started 5 months ago, not going too quickly, and I must admit that I'm still having the same pleasure, if not more! I guess you can finish it much much quicker than that, but you can also choose to wander around, discover the zones, NPCs, features, etc. (and I haven't even gone into the competitive side of the game yet!) And I like very much the continuity of the GW universe, I'm also discovering slowly NF, and I'll play factions later this year hopefully. Starting with NF is easier that starting with Prophecies because there's a lot of help and guiding at the beginning, but since NF has advanced features like heroes or weapon/armors upgrades/salvages, it may then become more difficult. If I were to start GW again now, I would still buy Prophecies first, then NF (I wanted to buy factions but couldn't resist the xmas sales!) Apparently Factions has a shorter lifespan, NF is slightly less. Read more in this very useful article: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...buy-id2249.php |

I wouldn't buy prophecies at this point, you'll find getting a party in most of the missions quite troublesome. But if you're one of those types who enjoying playing with heroes and henchmen through an entire campaign, then yeah, go for it.
