Question An "Old" Prophecies Player - Where To Continue?

Well, some of you may remember me. I started playing Guild Wars in the winter of 2005, so I've been around since the original version (save for the betas). I've been through many different interests lately, including returning to my Warcraft III clan and taking an interest in VALVe's fpses.

I'm thinking of returning to Guild Wars - I only own Prophecies. If I am to only get Factions or Nightfall, which do you think I should get? I have three ascended lvl 20 Tyrian characters (two of which beat the campaign missions), and I have also participated in both the Factions and Nightfall preview weekend events, so I know a fair bit about both.

I have always been geared more towards PvE, but on the other hand, Factions has some useful assets such as alliances, and I also am the kind of person who likes to play things in chronological order (so in this case, Prophecies -> Factions -> Nightfall).

So tell me, what do you think I should get? Don't think on which would be better if I can only get one of the two chapters, but rather think of me owning both already - which would you think is a better one to start with after where Prophecies left off?

Your advice is appreciated.

The neat thing about both is that you can jump between the campaigns without really worrying about a 'timeline' break in the game plotlines. Factions has a very simple and straightforward plot, while Nightfall's evolves in a more complex fashion over time. As you point out, each campaign has their attractions.

I'm an old school 'do it in a row' kinda guy myself, so I vote Factions

I'm also "keep it in order" minded. None of my Prophecies characters get to go to Nightfall unless they have finished Factions.

It also helps when groups in NF expect you to have skills from Factions.

IDK I personally have them all, but If I was to step into the game anew from Prophecies, I would hit Nightfall asap. it has enough in it to make up for the missing skills from factions with little worry. Heck you can even unlock both Assassin and Ritualist skills in nightfall with heroes...

If it came to it you could ge the cheap web based Factions PvP package just for the UAS from factions and not miss too much along the way. Its an option is all guys... Not saying anything bad against Factions, just saying that in comparison content wise, Nightfall has the most to offer.

Thanks for your input guys, though I want some more opinions to form a majority reccomendation. I agree Nightfall is superior to Factions, as from what I've heard, though I just won't be able to sleep at night knowing I skipped a chapter in the chronological order.

I would vote Factions - Nightfall is great, but I found being able to get through Factions so quickly to be very refreshing after Prophecies. Also, Nightfall kind of ties the three together (well, sort of), so for continuity, again Factions. There's also some awesome armor in Factions (well, Nightfall too ).

You mentioned that you are more of a roleplaying person, so Nightfall would be a better choice for you I would think. It involves a much deeper storyline, lets you use heroes (Thank God this concept came out) and plus you don't need to own factions to get involved in an alliance unless you own a guild (which I'm assuming you don't because you're just getting back into the game). Factions is a good game, but get Nightfall first. As for whoever mentioned that Nightfall ties up the story of the first two games, it does, but it focuses more on Prophecies than Factions (you learn about the Titans for example). Plus these ties are optional quests so if you wanted to, you could skip them until you get all 3.

Plus in Nightfall you can take advantage of the insignia system. Remember the bonuses in your armor from Prophecies? Well in Nightfall you can buy those bonuses and put them on your armor. Also, this is not permanent, as you can swap them out whenever you want (you have to rebuy the insignia though, but most don't cost too much). Now you can have a monk with +energy armor and not have to be half naked.

My vote is with Factions for reasons which have generally been stated already.

If you like to play Solo (with henchies I mean) then I recommend nightfall and then factions, Nightfall is great story wise and then Factions with heros is wonderful, but I could not get on with it just with henchies. Mind you that could just be 'cos I'm not very good

I'd spend 5 minutes in Nightfall (really - thats all it takes) to pickup the basic heros and go get Olias from prophercies. Then continue through Factions with those heros. Those 5 minutes will not spoil the plot at all or give anything away and the heros will be very useful through Factions

Factions
Pros
* Very fast levelling
* More variety in terrain
Cons
* A lot of City (manageable though)
* Kind of short storywise

Nightfall:
Pros
* Heroes
* Very stretched terrain
* Nice Quests and less Time-based missions
Cons
* A lot of desert
* Replayability factor close to nihil

I'd say NF replayability factor is higher than Factions'. I did Factions once with my assassin and that's enough for now.

I echo what Spellforge said, add both chapters to your account and plan on playing through Factions then Nightfall, but pick up the basic heroes as soon as possible as it makes it more fun and easier to play through if you don't have all human players.

And just to point out:

He said he's been around since the original version, not from the beginning - there is a difference. :P

Factions tops NF's replayability factor mainly becoz it's a small campaign.
Nothing more, nothing less
That's of course a matter of opinion.
I should've stated that in my previous post tbh.

I'm kind of a chronologically oriented person myself, however, I'd pick-up Nightfall first. The primary reason is the heroes that are available in Nightfall - and as previously mentioned, Olias the necro hero in Prophecies. All of your heroes can be set-up with your previously unlocked skills if you plan on linking your accounts.

The unlocked heroes will then make Factions much easier to get through - especially if your primary character isn't high on the desirability scale for certain mission/quest parties.

If you plan on getting them both anyway, I would get Factions first and play it through at least once for story continuity before going to NightFall.

Both are good for different reasons and I enjoy the PvE aspect of both. I'm not much of a PvPer but It would be a shame not to have access to alliance battles which are just good fun.

Nightfall. No question whatsoever.

The story-line is much, much better. The player becomes a central figure in the events that take place. In factions, you're just along for the ride. The events you encounter are better thought out than factions, too.

The voice acting in Nightfall is much better. Unless you actually like the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard and other such noises.

The Mission Bonus system in Nightfall is vastly better than the "beat the clock" crap that factions gave us. There are 2 missions in Nightfall that are beat the clock type bonuses, but most of them have different bonus requirements, like "Don't kill these guys," "Do what this guy says as you go along," etc.

The landscapes in Nightfall are much more enjoyable than the ugly crap in factions.

So, what you guys are saying is that when heroes are unlocked in Nightfall, you can take them with you to the Prophecies and Factions areas?

Nightfall gets my choice only because you can get customizable skill bars for each hero. And once a hero is acquired they can go anywhere you travel.
