Buy them or salvage them.

Iron Ingots are extremely common. You can either get them at a Material Crafter or salvage them. If you get a drop that pretty much is a type of Armor/Headgear, 99% of the time, you'll pull some iron out of it. If you buy them from the crafter, they come in stacks of 10. If you want to get a good list on what will salvage into them, check out the wiki page that Dean provided.

Buying Iron ingots from the material trader is NOT a good idea. They charge way too much for them. If you're in a hurry to get them, find out what the material trader is selling them for, and then find another player who will sell you them for about 70% of the trader's price.

Salvaging is probably your best option, just collect any type of armor that drops for you and salvage them, salvaging unwanted weapons like swords axes etc. can also be a good source of iron/steel.
