I need some help, all
I bought prophesies not too long ago, and I've been addicted to it. The only problem is that I've been having some problems sticking to a character. In other games I've been either a mage-type, or an archer-type character. For some reason, the elementalist and ranger professions bore me. I dunno if it's because I'm not far enough into the game (my r/e's lvl 8 and my e/me's lvl 9), or if they're just not the right professions for me.
I've also tried and given-up on a necro/monk (supportive minion master) I liked it at first, I got it up to lvl 10, but then I got bored of it. Then I made a w/mo (it's lvl 9 now). I like the fact that I can live for a long time (because of strong armor) but I don't like the melee combat. I don't like just watching my char slice away at a mob, while I use a skill every once in a while. I recently made a monk. It's still in pre and is only lvl 3 -.- I've never really been a support char before, but the idea doesn't really appeal to me. I'd rather be doing damage than preventing/reversing it. The only profession I haven't tried is the mesmer and from what I've read it's not easy to get used to, so that's out of the question. So basically... e-bored me, and I died too often -.- r-shot too slow, and each shot was weak w-didn't like the melee, but I liked the armor n-bored me too... mo- healing isn't my thing me-too advanced for me so I guess I'm looking for a solution. Is there any combination of classes that allows for quick-ish ranged combat with decent armor? Would a w/r that uses bows be a bad idea? I figured the attack speed enhancing skills would be nice (like frenzy), and the warrior armor it nice. Of the other way around (a r/w) that uses a bow, for the same reasons as a w/r. Or...is a mesmer really that hard to master? Should I start a new char combo? Should I mess around with different builds to see what I like? Or should I stick with one until I get a bit further into the game? If you have any kind of opinion at all, please let me know. Thanks for your time ^_^;; Sorry this was so long |

w/r with bows is AWEFUL. A W/R can be done (my warrior is one), but don't even thing of using a bow.
You should look into getting a short bow for your ranger. Different bows shoot at different speeds, so that will probablly fix your problem with your ranger. You can also use skills like tiger's fury etc to get an attack speed increase (a frenzy for rangers). |

Prophecies takes a while to get to the good stuff because it's trying to make sure the player has time to learn the game as they go along. At level 8 or 10, you're not really getting to any of the really interesting stuff for any of the characters.
The elementalist is a lot of fun once you get to [skill]Meteor Shower[/skill] and can pair it with [skill]Arcane Echo[/skill]. You can MS from a skill trainer North of Lion's Arch and Arcane Echo from the skill trainer in Beetletun. These places are west of ths Shiverpeak mountains if you haven't gotten there yet. Later in the game you can get a skill called Glyph of Renewal that will let you cast MS every 15 seconds until you run out of energy. Not as fast as Arcane Echo, but I like the more consistent damage output. The Ranger is excellent at interrupting enemy skills and applying conditions to multiple foes. Apply Poison, then select a target and fire, tab, fire, tab, fire...damage and degen on multiple foes, means more work for the healer. And it's great fun keeping the monks from healing or the spell casters from using their spells. Also, different bows have different fire rates. Try doing a search on "bow" at www.guildwiki.org to see what would suit your play style better. But to reiterate, yes, I think you should stick it out a bit longer. While this game isn't level centered, there is still a big difference from level 10 to level 20. Attribute points and access to skills mostly (you can't even capture an elite skill until you get to the desert missions). Finally, since those are the two classes you prefer, try doing some reading in their forums here on Guru. Lots of advice for people new to the game or those professions. |

Characters at those levels are, of course, going to be weak. I think you need to stick with some until much later. I almost gave up on my MM because it seemed so useless, but a much higher leveled MM grouped with me once and showed me what was possible. Now my necro is my favorite character. She's very versatile and powerful. Just have some patience and slog through.

My advice: Don't judge any class until you have ascended and capped a few good elites. I play all the classes (except assassin which I don't have room for,) and I enjoy them all. Monk is my favorite.

You may be advancing too slowly through the game. How far are you w/ your lvl 9 or 10 chars? If you progress too slowly any class can become boreing.

First off, welcome to Guild Wars!
As far as finding a profession you like, try playing through with it a bit more. All of the professions become more effective (and more fun!) as you progress with them longer. When I started with my Warrior, I thought he was pretty ineffective. But after I got farther with him he was dishing out some major damage. Same can be said of all the professions: If it doesn't suit your fancy at the beginning, just wait til you get farther. And that's all I can reccomend right now, that you play a little more with your characters. Adjust their attributes and skills until they start to form into something more of your liking. |

I had some of the same issues with the game feeling slow when I first got Prophecies. I left the game for a long while, then when Factions came out I started playing it and loved it. If you have the money, I would recommend you look into getting Factions (or nightfall) and start a character there. The "leveling up" period is much shorter and you get into more difficult areas much quicker. If you don't have the $$, I would try to stick with one class and plow through until you get to higher levels. That (at least for me) is when the game gets fun. I'm not big on grinding which is what some of Prophecies felt like to me. Now don't get me wrong, I have since gone back to Prophecies many times for the higher level areas and skills, but I don't start any characters there anymore.

The game starts at lvl 20.
Hate to break it to you, but you haven't played *any* characters yet. Get one to 20 and try a variety of builds. If you still don't like it, then it's not for you, but don't judge a profession based on how it plays at lvl 9. |

I would suggest trying a necro(you tried a lvl 10 MM, thats not even considered a necro in my book). necros are one of the funnest classes and you can run a great SS build with only prophecies.

I went through the exact same thing when I first started, some of the classes I just hated at first are now my favorites.... (I still hate playing a warrior mostly though). I have evolved to the more versatile classes being my favorites: Ranger/Mesmer/Necro then Monk and Ele, then Warrior of the core 6 classes. I always have fun with monk when I add smite damage though (I have an aggressive personality I suppose). SS is short for [wiki]Spiteful Spirit[/wiki]

Combined with [skill]Arcane Echo[/skill] and a few other skills this is a very good build. |

As for you character delema, go with one class until lvl 20 and when you still don't like it try another class, Prophecies does start of very slow so you just got to get past the beginning. ~Death~ |

Spiteful Spirit Necro is my favorite. It's going to be a while before you can capture it though, it's in the Southern Shiverpeaks in Snakedance, Iron Mines of Maladune, and the Talus Chute.

be sure to take other players with you on your quests or atleast take the henchman....not sure if you are as you say that your elemental dies quickly...remember at anything other than max lvl with max armor....casters usually don't last long in combat if they are in there trying to mix it up...stay back and let your warrior (players or henchman) go in and get aggro then blast em :P

Another important tip, if you don't know it already, especially when playing caster or low armor characters: CTRL + SHIFT + spacebar will target an enemy without you attacking it (you do have to select a a target first...you can do that by hitting the "c" key or by using CTRL + SHIFT and clicking on the enemy with your mouse). As long as your agro circle is close enough, your henchmen will rush into the fight, grabbing the agro of the enemies allowing you to start attacking with less pressure on you.
