Default New Player Looking for Guidance

Hey Everyone,
I recently bought the original Guild Wars game (Prophecies is what I've learned it's called), and am slowly learning things...but there's so much I'm still so confused on! Now I know nothing about this game other than what I've heard from word of mouth or from reading forums. I've read the manual that comes with the game but there are still a lot of things I'm not understanding. Here's a few questions I'm hoping someone could help me out with:

I understand that armor is crafted in this game. What I was confused on is last night I ran the catacombs with my Mesmer and there was a collecter there who would give me a pair of stylish boots in exchange for five gargoyle fragments. So confused! Can you also get armor from doing collections?

I keep hearing the term "Pre Searing", and have no idea what that is referring to. Can anyone offer any insight into what that is?

I'm still in what I consider the "starting area" of the game, and have been looking around for armor crafters but have found none...am I still too low for that? (level 6 now)

I only have the original Guild Wars...but I'd like to try Factions or Nightfall...do I need to get Factions in order to play Nightfall...or are they all independent games? For example could I have bought Nightfall alone and only played the Nightfall game, or did I need to buy the original Guild Wars? I guess to put it simply...are Factions and Nightfall expansions to Prophecies, or is each game independently playable?

Is there any way to increase my bag space, or store crafting items away...like a bank or storage area in a town or city?

These are just a few things I can think of at the moment. Any info/help you can give is very much appreciated!

You need to collect 5 gargoyle first by killing gargoyles then you go back to the collector and exchange them for the piece of armor.

Pre-searing is the "training ground" of the game, you are in pre-searing.

All games are independent of each other.

Storage is available when you get into the proper game.

first off welcome to guild wars. your best sourse of knowledge is the wiki:

http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

now on to the questions:

armor is crafted from armor crafters found in several of the larger towns/outposts. but there is also collector armor available from many different collectors scattered around the lands. in exchange for certain items, they will give you certain pieces of armor. they are generic in comparison to the armors that you craft (no armor specific bonuses, like +armor vs types of dmg, or + energy) but they have the same armor level. its just there for an alternative for ppl who may be too broke to craft their armor.

pre-searing is where you are at in the game right now. dont want to give away the storyline for you, but if you want to find out a bit more, check out the wiki. once you complete the primary objectives in pre, you will move onto post-searing.

all you will find in pre is the one set of collector armor. once you move onto post, crafters with better armor will become available immediately. just hold tight for a bit longer.

factions and nightfall are stand alone game. you dont have to have prophecies to play them. you can join the games together so that you can take prophecies based chars over to nightfall, or vice versa.

yes, you will get a few more storage options after pre. you should be able to grab a belt pouch in pre, and maybe a bag or two, but im not sure on the bags anymore. once you leave pre, i know you can purchase two bags to increase your storage. you will also have an account wide vault available once you leave pre. for a one time cost of 50g, you can up one. it contains an additional 20 slots. for another one time fee of 50g, a material storage will be unlocked, which is capable of holding 250 of each crafting material.

Welcome to the game. I won't bother repeating what others have said, but just enjoy the game. At this point you will have many many many questions. I encourage you to play the game and you'll find that most of these questions will answer themselves.

Also don't worry about messing up. Just have fun and play around with the different professions available. You'll eventually find that you enjoy 1 profession better than the others and that will become your primary character.

If/when you get Factions and/or Nightfall, be sure to *add* them to your account rather than create a new account for them. With all the chapters added to one account then one character can travel to all the different continents to experience the entire game (except for starter areas).

** Best place for info to learn about the game is the forums here and gw.gamewikis.org/ But beware that you can also spoil parts of the game if your into following along the story line.

I understand that armor is crafted in this game. What I was confused on is last night I ran the catacombs with my Mesmer and there was a collecter there who would give me a pair of stylish boots in exchange for five gargoyle fragments. So confused! Can you also get armor from doing collections?

** Yes various collectors will have items such as armor and weapons that you can trade collected items for. There will be scattered throughout all the games. Some people prefer to use the collector’s items since later on in game you can get max weapons that can then be modded to suit your needs.

I keep hearing the term "Pre Searing", and have no idea what that is referring to. Can anyone offer any insight into what that is?

** Per Searing is the current Ascalon area you are in now. When you have explored the current area more (make sure you do what all you wish to do before proceeding) you meet with Sir Tydus accept his mission, and will be brought into what they call Post Searing. The movies will explain it better.

I'm still in what I consider the "starting area" of the game, and have been looking around for armor crafters but have found none...am I still too low for that? (level 6 now)

** Armor crafting takes place in towns and outposts. Do stay a while in Pre Searing to learn the basics, explore most of the map and just to check out the beautiful landscape. Since your level 6 you should be good to go through to Post searing though.

** All are separate games that you can start new players in each or move your current characters to the other continents if you have progressed far enough in the game to do so. Prophecies or as you call the original Guild Wars will allow you to move your character later in the game from a large town called Lions Arch. With Guild Wars you seem to have to be further along to move between games than if you were playing Nightfall or Factions. Personally from a player who has played all three since three months after GW came out I would stick with the one you have, learn the ropes and then move on to Nightfall followed by Factions or Chapter 4 by that point.

Is there any way to increase my bag space, or store crafting items away...like a bank or storage area in a town or city?

** Once you leave Pre yes you can buy bags.. (or trade to collectors to get more storage space. In Post you can purchase a storage area or bank to hold items and crafting materials. Also if you’re lucky you can defeat some of the Charr bosses to the north (Over the wall quest I believe) and you may possible get a bag for storage as one of the drops.

These are just a few things I can think of at the moment. Any info/help you can give is very much appreciated!

Only thing I can say is play though the game and have lots of fun. I think I have almost 1000 hours of play now. Some have a lot more than that. Also do not sell any Dye drops you find to people in Pre. The black, white, and silver are worth a lot more to dye traders and other people in Post. Send messages to me in game if you have any questions or need some guidance. IGN - Alexandra Serden

Thanks so much everyone!

It's good to see so many helpful people

That site is fantastic, wish I had known about it sooner!

So far I love this game, the graphics are amazing and I'm already seeing the endless possibilities of complex combinations of skills you can create. Love playing the Mesmer...so different from any other class I've played in an MMO, and it takes some crafty thinking...I love the challenge of it. I'm also working on a Monk, I've always played healers in past MMO's and thought I'd continue the trend here...though it seems like this will be a much different experience which I'm excited about.

Again, thanks everyone, maybe we'll cross paths at some point in game!

It's nice to see someone excited about the game. Use the wiki as it can answer most of what you will need to know. If you need help during play PM and I will help you with any questions you may have. My IGN is also Risky Ranger, Sniper the Futile is my character I'm working on right now.

And if you do decide you want to add another chapter to your experience, get nightfall. Most players like it a lot more than Factions.

Welcome to GW! glad to hear you're having a good time with it.

Since your questions have been answered already, I'll just say:

DO NOT SELL ANY DYE YOU MAY GET!!! It's worth a LOT more than the 1g the merchant will pay for it. I'll be glad to give you a hand in-game as well. (I've got a lot of love for the Mesmers! ) Just add "Dora Explora" to your friends list.
