Pick up everything, hold onto gold items.
Armor as a general rule is a goldsink. I have all my characters equipped in 15k armor but thats because if i want i can make 200k in a day. Dont buy fancy armor if you cant afford it within a day.
Being limited to prophecies your best bet is to finish the game, and go to the Temple of Ages and join farming groups in the Fissure of Woe. The drops won't be great but normally it will be free for you to go in and you make ~3k. Not great, but it's something. Just pick up everything.
I remember when I began the game, and tried to buy my first set of 15k armor, it was luxon 15k, and it bankrupted me. I still needed another 60k. I spent a week playing through all the missions, just collecting drops. I was a ritualist, i couldn't farm jack. just leave no stone unturned.

Another point I haven't seen others mention is just because a rune is purple or gold doesn't mean it it is worth salvaging out of the item. Usually the item will be worth more than the rune will be and should be merch'd as is. Obviously check the prices at the rune merchant and verify to be sure.
