Classes in demand?
Hey, new guy here. I'm about to start up when the trilogy arrives in the mail and I am thinking about what class to play beforehand. I played Warrior for about 2 weeks about a year ago and really didn't like it because there were too many of them. This time around, I want to be acceptable for guilds. What classes are in demand and which ones are possibly a bad idea to make if you are looking to get into groups. Thanks in advance!

It's very debatable as to the best type of class to a beginning player, and what he or she will do good at, so could you highlight some aspects of the game that you enjoy, so that we may narrow down our search to the perfect profession?

Alot of people like the ranger just b\c its very diverse. Just pick a profession and play it, if you like it keep playing it, if not make a new guy. It doesn't cost anymore money so you don't really lose anything.

Played WoW for 2 years man. Been in this position dozens of times. All it comes down to for me is being able to get into a guild/group without having to work so hard that I end up quitting (like last time). I am mainly a PvP kind of person and I hope to be able to do it without be "thee gimp class". I guess a lot of the WoW mentality is still with me and maybe it doesn't apply here.
Either way, I am caught between a series of things. I am considering Monk to be able to heal and support people which I find quite fun. The problem is I hear most people use Monk as a subjob so healing isn't as important here as other ORPG's. Assassin sounds cool but that happens everytime I pickup a game. I played Thief at first in FFXI and played Rogue first in WoW. Always ended up regretting it because of the overflow and sometimes monotony. Mesmer sounds interesting as well. Warlock was my most appreciated class in WoW and they both share a few things. It seems like it is much more of a support class, though, so soloing is a bit overwhelming and can be frusterating (assumption like the rest of what I'm typing). Necromancer sounds great as well. This is the one I'm leaning toward the most. I am just not too sure if throwing dots on someone and then running around is still something I want to do. Ranger seems like something I've been waiting to try. I never have played an archer type class in an RPG before, well besides Ragnarok. I always hear they are known as the most boring classes to play, though. That's what's keeping me away from this. Anything else I'm not really thinking about. As you can see over half of the classes are in my mind so It's going to be a lot of reading before I come to a conclusion. Thanks for the replies by the way. |

i recomend a class that you can depend on to be sturdy and low learning curve b/c u dont like wars maybe a derv easy to play
or a ele just make stuff go boom |

I'd Suggest Necro or Ranger.
Both are versatile, and will both challenge your needs, and highlight a new realm of unknown. You never really know how bad a class is until you play it If you don't like it, Re-roll... |

you will get more than one slot to make characters....so you can try a bunch out.
Though some classes are more difficult for players and some are just not as wanted as others (the assasin already mentioned), most people feel you cant go wrong with the trinity: warrior, ele and monk; these are usually almost always wanted. Monk can be difficult for a newbie to pick up if you are healing or protecting. Eles can do ranged damage quite well but make up for that in lack of max armor-- Many people have had problems with the mesmer class since it doesnt really 'do' damage that other players can see---but if played well a mesmer can make or break a party. Necros are a versitile class as well, you can make minions, do lots of degen or curse your enemies...and usually also find getting into parties pretty easy. There are lots and lots of thoughts about rangers, and many a new player has made one as their first character---they can do ranged damage, put down traps and have a pet to 'tank' for them as well. (not mentioning all the other stuff they can do as well). The later released classes are still not as widely accepted as the original 6 but, well that might just be they havent been around as long and people havent come up with the 'uber' builds for them yet---- So play around and have some fun, if you are getting all 3 chapters I would suggest trying out chapter one and seeing how you like the main 6...once you get the hang of it then make a toon in both the later chapters and just run around for fun and get your 'legs' for the game. Whatever class you pick you can always find answers to your questions, help for your builds, or just game chatting here on guru. Hope to see ya out there soon! |

Monks are definitely in demand but they're one of the two professions not recommended for new players (the other being mesmer).
I'd recommend a ranger - you get a bow + a pet and have decent armor/attacks. But, just have fun! |

That's a lot of replies... this must be the premier forum. I see what you mean about the fact that you can make several characters. The only thing is that I like to stick to something and use my alias for my main guy. Now of course I can just delete one if I don't like it but I don't like walking in with that mentality because otherwise I can end up starting over a dozen times.
I'll keep reading about Monk, Ranger and Necro. Thanks a lot fellas. |

The thing that makes me prefer GW over WoW is how easy it is to change your character. If you decide you don't like the class/attributes you chose, you don't need to waste gold and/or precious time to find something you like. That being said, Monks are without a doubt the best profession ever.

There is separate character creation methods for PvE and PvP. The PvE character is created as a Level 1 with appropriate lack of XP, etc. Your levels go up as you gain XP, you can purchase skills with gold and skill points, you work your way up to max stat weapons with upgrades and purchase better armor as you reach places where it is available. You can also play PvP with a PvE character.
The PvP-only character creation is different. You create a level 20 with max stat armor and max damage weapon, and skills/weapon mods are unlocked with won faction points. These characters are meant to be re-rolled as needed for PvP. The unlocked skills/weapon mods are per account, not character based, so are available always after purchase. Once you have the game, you can watch PvP matches on Observer Mode and see what profession combos are in use. Keep in mind that the answer to "what's wanted" changes. PvE is different than PvP, and even there it depends on the PvP type.

If you go with one of the core classes - Ele, Mesmer, necro, monk, warrionr, or ranger - be sure to start in Prophecies. You'll gain a ton of skills by doing quests there. The other 2 chapters don't give skills out as quest rewards. Instead, you'd have to buy 95% of your skills, which gets expensive after a while.
Since you don't like the idea of playing a Warrior, I'd recommend either Elementalist for the very high demand for them in parties or Ranger for their diverse capabilities. Necros and Monks are also highly sought after, but are a bit trickier to play. Mesmers are probably the toughest to play in terms of both level of skill required and difficulty in getting into groups. (only because non-Mesmers either don't know what Mesmers are capable of or have had too many experiences with bad ones) |
