Without death leveling? Is there a way? And I have searched, so please, no flame.

There's a page on PvX that used to be on GuildWiki. It's a list of builds designed to level a pet to Dire.

It should be noted though, that some of the builds (namely the Paragon and Assassin ones) have not been fully tested. If you do use those builds, I'd advise against using a character who you're going for the Survivor title on.
