Which profession should I make my FIRST character?
I'm new to the game. Just wanted to know what the best profession for a beginner is.

Warrior or Ranger would probably be best to start with. Monk wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Don't start a monk as a beginner, it will only cause frustration until you figure out how everything works. Understanding the game makes being a monk so much easier.
I would suggest warrior or ranger, as kook suggested, they seem to be the most user-friendly, and rangers are very versatile Just remember, you paid for the game, play it how you want, just because someone says "Don't go warrior/monk, it's a noob choice!" doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, it's one of the easiest ways to learn how the game works, so long as you don't use mending and healing hands |

First of all, you need to be specific in what campaign or expansion you are talking about, for me or anyone else to help you. (Proph, Factions, Nightfall? EoTn) I assume prophecies? I would suggest a warrior.

I'd say that fire based Elementist is another good choice for the beginner as it's not only pretty powerful but also lets you see how spells/enchants/wards work but also has some easy energy management too.

Every class has their advantages and disadvantages. Firstly I'd ask if you were more interested in being like a "caster," a "Melee fighter" or a "ranged" fighter. Then maybe if you want to play more offensive or defensive. From there, yup, props to xiaotsu - pick whatever one you want and learn/study it. And of course, this is GW, so create 5 or 6 chars, make one of each, mess around with them and see which one in pre (beginners zones/areas) you enjoy playing the best. After doing all that, I guarantee you, you'll know which one you want to play through with first .
Have fun! <3 Siadena |

And what profession YOU want to play is is entirely up to you. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Profession That link provides a lot of useful information. Read through it,and read through all the profession specific pages aswel and then decide what sounds the most appealing to you. Welcome to guild wars. |

As said in the above posts, warrior and ranger tend to be good choices.

I would personnaly go for elementalist or ranger, my choice would be elementalist.
They are probably one of the simpler class (dont flame me! I play one myself, i'm conparing it with somethign like mesmer), you are the damage dealer, plain and simple, you dont need to understand the most complicated part of the game to do your job well. A warrior is harder to play well in my experience. You are more independant then most class, once you have some key skills(which i cant know you will have not knowing your game(s)), you can solo (or nearly-solo) some areas. And later farm if you need to. |

Welcome to GW!!
My first character was a Necromancer and I thoroughly enjoyed learning the game that way. You really can't go too wrong, although I would avoid Monk, Assassin, and Mesmer on your first play through. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing those classes but it's better to familiarize yourself with the game mechanics before attempting those as they are a bit more complicated than the other proffessions. Enjoy the game! |

I'd say elementalist. You get to stay back and kill stuff fairly easily and can watch the gameplay from further away letting you observe how the basics work. Fire eles are also quite easy to grasp and you'll be wanted by most human groups without question. Warrior is also a good first char aswell but you'll be right in the line of fire and so may take a bit longer to grasp the basics as you'll spend more time in a flap cause you're getting pounded on, hehe. Ranger is ok aswell for similar reasons as the ele although an ele is simpler to run/learn well. Eles are also capable of farming many areas (as are warriors) so you'll likely earn gold faster once you figure out what you can kill easily.
I'd definitely stay away from monk, mesmer, assassin, ritualist, dervish or paragon until you've figured out how the game mechanics work as these classes tend to take a bit more skill/knowledge to play well. |

Ranger is a great profession to start with. It gives you the tools to succeed both offensively and defensively. From there, you can balance and hone your approach to the game.
Necromancer is also a good choice. Minions can give you enough cushion to observe how the opposition attacks and find their flaws. Blood skills can heal you while you inflict damage. Anyway, try them all and use the profession that you have the most fun playing. It is supposed to be fun. |

Yes! Always start off with PVE IMO...you get a feel of the game and learn the skills, and how to use them.
