Closed/Full districts - Guild Wars Forums

I have always known a full district to be one that has too many people, which only happens during events nowadays. I was in Kam, trying to switch districts to get a certain quest again, when I was told one was closed. I tried another, it was full. International districts, if it makes a difference. What's a 'closed' district? And why, after several attempts, did it let me into a 'full' district to see only three people? I tried searching this and didn't see anything related just by looking at thread titles.

I assume a closed district is just that. The servers won't allow anyone to enter in order to have it removed from the list. That would free up server resources and a bit of bandwidth.

some of the districts had wintersday gifts in inaccessable places...maybe they closed some to clear out things (or to clear out some of the afkers?).

Only situation when I have seen that closed message have been when I tried to enter the highest number (last) district, but the last person there had left after I had opened the district selection menu. So when they left the district it was closed and my district menu wasn't updated, giving me the closed message while attempting to enter. Checking the distrcit menu the second time showed the district I tried to enter no longer being there.

In a situation such as the recent Wintersday festival, a lot of people will go to the main towns to be there when Dwayna/Grenth arrive, so the system will create enough districts to hold them all. When, Dwayna/Grenth leaves, so will a lot of people. So the system then has a whole lot of districts with not much in them, and needs the resources elsewhere. It will close some districts so that no one new will go there and then they can shut it down when everyone leaves. (They may even move people to other districts - i dunno)
This can also happen, rarely, just about anywhere, anytime. It's just the system managing resources. They could, conceivably, also renumber districts while they are closed (or marked "full") so that a district that was once full, suddenly appears nearly empty.
