Hey guys.

I am new, I come from the World of Warcraft and FFXI.

I am already liking Guild Wars, it's a lot of fun, but I have some questions.

First, I don't understand the mission/quest thing. What's the difference? Which do I need to do? And so on?

Second, is there an auction house in this game?

Third, how do I know what a good build is for my character or weapons to use?

I have a lvl 4 War/Mnk.

Any links or whatever would be appreciated, as well as just responses. Thanks in advance.

Let me say, welcome to GW

1. Missions are to follow the storyline and advance in the world and gain XP. Quest's are to gain XP and special rewards.
(some are Primary that you need to do)

2. No there is not, Only Trade Channel. (Wanted a auctionhouse since the beginning)

3. If you are a Warrior, use sword and Shield for ex. All weapons have requirements that fits a surten class (Req 9 sword or strength ex) Try some builds or search here on the forum, alot of nice builds. (see link below)

Missions/quests: You have to complete missions to move forward in the game, the only quests you are required to complete to advance are primary quests, when you press "L" in game, they are at the top.

No auction house, go to any major city, such as Kamadan, Lion's Arch or Kaineng centre and use trade channel, you can also press"P" in game and go to the party tab to see a list of what people are buying/selling.

As far as builds go, I am no expert, but at lvl 4 your choices are pretty limited, I just used what seemed to work, experiment and find out is the best policy I think.

Welcome to Guild Wars. I'm a FF fan myself, although I haven't played it online.

If you have any questions or are just stuck with quests and missions, wiki is the place to go. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

You make the storyline progress by doing missions. Missions are often linked to each other by primary quests - these will get their own section in your quest log so you can more easily see what you need to do to get to the next mission. Quests are there to help fill you in on other, little parts of the game storyline. Quests are optional, although doing them can get you some nice rewards and help you level up faster.

Another difference between the two is deaths. During a quest, if your whole party dies you will be resurrected at the nearest resurrection shrine and can continue on as normal. If your whole party dies during a mission, you will fail the mission and have to start the mission all over again from the beginning.

Unfortunately, we don't have an auction house. There is a possibility that we'll be seeing one in GW2, but I wouldn't expect one to be added to the current GW games. For now though, there is a trade channel and a party search system that lets you advertise the things you have for sale and ask others if they have something specific that you want to buy.

As you say you're low level, there's no real need to worry about builds yet. Play about with the skills that you have and see what works best for you (this will help you design your own builds later).

For build ideas, you can check out the Campfire forum here, and another resource you could use is the PvXWiki.

Finally, there is one website that you should visit and add to your bookmark list - the Guild Wars Wiki. This site is an incredible resource and has information about pretty much everything you could ever want to know about GW.

As far as the auction house goes, you can use the auctions section on this site. It's far from perfect, but it works well enough. I, for one, have never understood the lack of an in-game auction house. Oh well.

Generally, missions are the cooperative missions that you complete with other people (usually or you could bring henchmen) and after completing the mission you are taken to the next mission in the storyline or the next primary quest. If you are still in the beginner area, there are no missions yet, you can do "missions" once you exit the beginner area.

You will know if you are in a mission area when you see a "Enter Mission" button below the party screen. If you are the party leader, you push this button and enter the mission.

Quests can be primary quests or secondary quests. Primary quests are to be completed to continue with the storyline and take you to the next mission area. Secondary quests are optional and usually give some type of reward as in a skill point, $, experience, or skill unlocks. As your first time playing, Id recommending trying to do the secondary quests due to the rewards. The skill unlocks will save you LOTS of $ in the future. However many people just stick to the primary quests and skip the secondaries.

In the beginner area you get a few primary quests, and mostly optional quests. Try to at least do all the trainer quests for the skills.

In regards to builds and skills at that level, you kinda have a limited supply of skills and attribute points, so use what makes sense and damages the most, and bring at least one self heal.

If you have no clue about the mission vs. quest thing, just keep playing through, itll make more sense in a little bit.

Have fun.

I didn't notice this stated (if it was then I guess I'll just repeat it anyway) but missions also appear as dots on your world map. Uncompleted missions appear as flashing dots on the world map. They are also repeatable. Quests are only doable once and are not represented by an outpost on the map, where you currently need to go is displayed by a green dot or text (if it is in an outpost).

No, however on the bright side (well, to me at least - I'm not a huge fan of grind for more power) max level stuff is easily attainable. After that there is only rarity of skins. So it's not like the lack of an auction house means you can't get items with good stats, just means if you find a high value rare skin item you will need to use something like Guru's auction to sell it.

Well, define "good". Generally speaking I define a "good" build to be one that you can complete you task with and that the rest of your party doesn't have fits over. If you play with the AI (otherwise known as hench/heroe or H/H) then they will not care at all. If you play with a guild then best to ask them. If you play with PUGS, well, that's going to be random. As such you find them by doing whatever your task is - if you finish it then the build is good.

If you want to see what others do and what is generally seen as "good" (and note, this is a combination of effective and easy to use - not necessarily the most effective builds) see http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

Best thing to do is to check the wiki: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page for the official one and http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page for the unofficial one. Check the skills section and pick what you want, it will tell you how to find it. You can also go look at quests for the area you are in and see if any give skills and do those quests. Finally you can unlock skills in PvP (either actual PvP or repeating the training areas against the AI) and they will be available at any skill trader for the appropriate campaign.

another question.

i just found about guild battle stuff.

what level do you need to be to do those typically?

and i see that you can do them with henchmen?

and what are heroes?

thanks guys, you are proving to be a very effective resource.

For PvP, ideally you should be level 20. I think most PvP modes don't let you compete unless your character is level 20 anyway. Although you will find yourself reaching the level cap fairly quickly in comparison to other games you've played.

For guild battles, there are henchmen available that you can use in your team. However, henchmen have preset builds that often aren't all that effective in practise (and you can't change the builds that henchmen use), so they're never going to be as efficient as a human player.

Heroes are like henchmen, but with a few differences. You have full control over the heroes under your command; you can customise their builds, you can give them weapons with the exact mods you want them to have, you can upgrade their armor with runes/insignias of your choosing, you can give them formation instructions in combat with control flags, and you can give them orders on which targets to attack and which skills to use and when. This makes them incredibly powerful and versatile additions to your party, although to get any of them you will need Nightfall or Eye of the North, and you can only control three heroes at any one time.
