Getting Bears for Pets?
I've been trying for some time now, and can't seem to do it. At the beginning of the game, pre-apocalypse, how do you tame a bear if it keeps using a skill that stops the process? Do I need a friend with a silencing skill, because I don't know what class would have one. Please help me, I really have my heart set on a bear pet, and it can obviously be done since it lets me start in the first place.

There is a method to charm a bear that involves two players working closely as a team. I can't say that I know the specifics of the method myself, although I would expect the wiki to have info on it.
Or, you could wait until post-searing. You can charm bears in the Eye of the North areas as well - and those ones come without the Brutal Mauling skill that slows down pet DPS. |

Yep, me and a friend tried this once - hard unless you're level 10+ or so. Or have 2/3 friends to help.

and as stated in the other post above me, brutal mauling hinders pet dps drastically; tame an EotN bear (if you have it, that is). |

Remember though some people tame pre-searing bears due to status. It's like the spider in UW for pre-searing only characters. If you do go post searing then yeah get it elsewhere.

Stick with a lynx (are they in pre? It's been a while) or the like until post searing. The time you spend trying to get a team mate that's smart enough will be double the time you would take to get to the area of the game where they are tamable easily.

I do this for people frequently. You don't need any specific profession or skills; it's just a matter of timing.
The helper attacks the bear to make it hostile. The tamer then uses Charm Animal, announcing so with ctrl. Then the helper just runs away in the opposite direction. The bear will give chase, preventing it from using Break Charm. The ranger can be halfway across the radar screen when CA resolves; it still works. |
