If I was sure it would be 29.99 solid, I'd get it now. And I'm just worried if I download it and reformat my PC later on, do I get to download it again or what? I'm also fishy about that site, what if I pay and they never send me a CD-key or anything...

As I said earlier, there are lots of players who would be happy to help you learn the ropes.
The client download is fairly small - The zip is 100kb, and the "necessary" files are a couple of hundred megabytes, downloaded when you first open the client after installing it. However, any time you enter a new area, enter a town or PvP area that contains players running skills you haven't encountered before, run into people running new item skins, etc. you'll have to download the files for them. GW with all the expansions and all files as of yesterday is 3.58 GB, and I strongly, strongly recommend you set the client to auto-download all the files prior to playing. You do this, assuming you're running Windows, by right-clicking the client shortcut and in the "Target" box, at the end outside of the quotations around the program install location, typing "-image" (w/o the quotes). In other words, the "Target" box should read something along the lines of ["C:/Program Files/Guild Wars/Guild Wars.exe" -image]. This will cause the client to start up, download anyfiles available from ANet that you don't already have, then close. You'll have to remove the -image tag to actually start the game. If you reformat or something, just download the client from GuildWars.com and repeat the above procedure. As far as sites - Amazon is 29.99 solid and very reliable, but your best bet is the ANet online store (although I don't know what their price is). Could I get a link to ANet's online store? Is it PlayNC or something different? So, the first GW game (Prophecies) is a fairly small download you say? I'm not looking at more than like 2-3 hours on my connection am I?
EDIT: How am I suppose to buy from their Online Store in game if I don't have an account? |

You can't. And I don't know how big Prophecies download is, because when you use -image you d/l everything regardless of your ability to access it.

The online store is PlayNC.com - the e-mail account you use to register is the same one your CD key will be tied to, I believe. (Ie., your GW account's login name is an e-mail address, and I think the one your PlayNC account uses is by default the one your GW account will be created with.)
As far as the download... because players can bring skills, skins, etc. from other campaigns, all these files have to be downloaded in addition to the actual Prophecies files. The big ones are of course the playable areas, and w/o the other campaigns you only need about 1/4 of them, but the -image trick downloads all files and doesn't distinguish between your having one of the games or all four. If you decide to go with the download-as-you-go approach (which, again, I highly recommend avoiding), you can be up and running in an hour or less with a decent connection. The download speed for GW through the client isn't very constant, so I can't give you a good estimate for downloading the whole program. My home connection is 700kbs and I download it in 4-5 hours. On their website, they said to login to the game and click online store to buy Guild Wars. Is there a place to signup for an account or do I have to buy the game first to do that? Is PlayNC.com a safe place, or ANet's official store?
@Fury: I might go ahead and buy the game from PlayNC (the regular Guild Wars game for 29.99) and just install it and then let it download everything overnight. Do I install the base game first and then run the -image option and download all the other stuff? |

PlayNC is ANet's official store (ANet is a subsidiary of NCSoft). Download, unzip, and install the client by pressing the big shiny button here and run the -image option; you don't have to have an account to do so.
The online store that you access through the client lets you add features to your existing account - you create the account by buying one of the three primary GW chapters. (EotN isn't a primary chapter, it's an expansion.) As I said, I believe buying through PlayNC does it for you, but if they simply give you an access key, open the client and select the "Create Account or Add Access Key" option under the login box. Will PlayNC tell the the total price before I pay or no? Is it 29.99 solid or plus tax? Can I pay via paypal, because I have funds in there that I want to use first.

Sales tax is applied over PlayNC.
For example, go here and read the asterisked subtext: Example PlayNC product |

PlayNC doesn't like some debit/credit cards because of the way they have security set up to prevent people from using stolen cards. I had the same problem buying EotN and had to contact support to have it resolved.

How good are they at answering support questions? I just submitted one to try and get it resolved. How long did it take them to get yours able to buy it? What company are you with? I got a BB&T Visa Debit Card.

I have mine through American Eagle Federal Credit Union. I had to go back and forth with them a couple of times, but they always responded in about 15 minutes or less and it took me less than an hour to get it resolved. (This was early afternoon EST though; I don't know how they handle tech support at night.)

I downloaded the setup from guildwars.com. That's the eye of the north setup though. Or do I just add the -image to it and download all of it? I can still use that to sign in with a Prophecies account right?

Yes, the client is generic; it's just currently displaying EotN artwork.
Anyway, I'm off to do... something. Feel free to IM me (blacksteel15), otherwise I'll check the thread again in a bit. Last edited by Fury Incarnate; Mar 11, 2008 at 04:49 AM // 04:49.. |

You've had excellent help so far so I'm just going to throw in my 2cents. When you do get the game, you are going to have a ton of files to download. Make a copy of your GW shortcut (rename it something like image downloader) and in the target window at the end, add -image (there's a space after the last " mark). I suggest that you let it run over night.
