Simple question but something that always confuses me.

How do I ask party leaders to let me join their party ?

Do I need to wait for an invite of can I request one ?

/invite with the player's name (as in /invite Player Name) after it will invite you to there party. Most people call it a self-invite.

I wouldn't do this to people who aren't advertising a party though. It can get a little aggravating.

I would make use of your Party Window, Simple Hit [P]. You should see the Leaders name and part of the message (If in his message he use GLF or LFG). From there you have a series of options including Whisper and join.

Whenever I use the party window I always seem to end up inviting people to join my party rather than the other way round

I'll give it another go.

If you request to join a single person, then it will count as if you had invited him. If there are multiple players, it will count as if you asked for an invite.
