Mesmer gives you access to the skills Echo and Arcane Echo which can be used to copy powerful but slow-recharging ele spells, for example Meteor Shower. Mesmer also has numerous skills you can use to reduce damage you take, like the 4 elemental Mantras.
I don't really recommend Necro spells on an ele - all necro spells can be cast better by a necro than an ele. Monk is another secondary to consider - your large energy pool means you can afford to bring a couple of defense skills to help yourself and your friends out (for example Aegis and Protective Spirit), and of course Monks have rechargeable resurrection spells, which are always nice to have around. |

Go mesmer first. Simply for arcane echo for pve anyway. Later its worth trying Assassin which I use for Assassins promise (nuker) and also good for AB and Fort Aspenwood etc. If you feel the need for hard res, sure try monk but bit of a waste to start with in my opinion.

Mesmer and Monk are good. Assassin if you want to farm with it.

Roughly put, for a new player E/Me is a good choice which teaches skill synergy, i.e., how certain combinations of skills are stronger than any of them on their own. Another good choice is E/Mo which teaches team synergy, i.e., how a team of players is stronger than any single member on their own.
Once you progress far enough through the game you will be given the option to change your secondary profession at will, and it will then be beneficial to try out all the secondaries to see how they can support your primary. Just keep in mind that your character is most effective when played in a way its primary profession was designed for. A tanking E/W with an axe is just that, ewww ... |
