Necro Healers vs Monks!?
I was thinking of making a monk to play as. But then I began to wonder if monks are the all powerful healing machines that everyone thinks they are. Like in the sabway build, which is excellent, that uses a necromancer healer and that works extremely well as you all might know. The necro's soul reaping ability allows for great energy management for healing, while monks don't really have any energy management skills. Is the divine favor of monks all that great? Are monks really the best profession in Guild Wars for healing/protection purposes?

Yes.
See, in PvP, stuff doesn't die that often, so soul reaping is essentially worthless there. So monks will always be the healer of choice in PvP. |

tbh monks are good for simple healing but theyre not the healers theyre made out to be imo. Like u said, necros make great healers
and as for protection, u cant beat a paragon that can reduce dmg around 80% making HM a laugh. So imo, monks are not the best at healing or protection, tho they make gd farmers :P EDIT: - gd point tho HawkofStorms, in pvp monks rule as healers, but defo NOT in PvE |

it does its job in pve.... as monsters are killed often in good intervals ... soul reaping makes for good e-management even after its several nerfs.
it just has problem in HM without help of prot monks because of insane dmg outputs... |

If the AI didn't [email protected], then Monk.
If the AI didn't require stupid, insane energy management in PvE, then Monk. This applies to PvE only. |

I'd totally take a necro healer over a monk in ANY situation. In PvP, there is a lack of constant deaths BUT Signet of Lost Souls will provide at least some energy where as a monk has no energy management or weak e management. WoH Hybrid works as a n/mo. It heals for a little less with a lack of runes but it still does the job. N/rt is good for straight healing but lacks prot. Weapon of remedy and vengeful weapon or splinter will help with your damage output + condition removal. Necro > monk healing imo.

While the N/Rt healer is king in terms of energy management and being able to provide good party wide heals, it has a big short coming-it doesn't handle spikes very well. In fact, it's pretty poor when you're fighting enemies that deal large amounts of damage at once.
However, monks are able to cover this easily. In addition, human monks are a great asset if done right-the AI has issues with energy management which is why everyone has a preference to the Necro healing. But human monks-if they know what they're doing-don't have this issue. So if you want to play a healer, be a monk. Let the heroes do the necro healing thing. |

In PvE: Necro > Monks, because monsters die fast so necros have infinite energy and they can spam their healing skills.
In PvP: Monks > Necros generally, because people do not die as fast, so necros can not spam thier skills and will be out of enregy eventually. But some builds do use necro healer, e.g sway. |

Heroes suck at energy management. Thus a necro healer with almost infinite energy makes sense, like the one found in Sabway.
But for a human player, unless they suffer the same intelligence problems as the hero AI, monks(and rits) make better healers. |

The whole point of Sab's build is synergy: the three necros work great in conjunction with each other. It's all about constant minion deaths/renewal = lotsa SR energy.

monks dont just heal. monks heal, prot, remove conditions and hexes, and a few other things i cant think of. Necros are great at spamming skills, but spamming can only get you so far and casting more powerful spells at the right time is usually better.

I generally prefer monks over necros as the primary healer. Most of the monk skills that get used activate and recharge faster than the Rt skills that are used in healing; they also heal for more with HB. In HM, having both a heal monk and N/Rt (w/ human prot monk, of course) work out extremely well.
If you're trying to pick which character to make, I'd go with monk, really. Heroes handle N/Rt role better than monk heroes do. There are issues with people being bad monks, of course, just hope that you're a fast learner |

@hawkofstorms You could swap some skills in those builds to include hex removal or have somebody else bring hex removal. |

Sabway is not written in stone can can have hex removal added it to it.
IMO(this is only related to PvE though...should be no doubt in pvp monks>all) Monks = Protection, actually that is why they are predominate in PvP also. Spirit Bond at the right time is simply win. [Protective Spirit] [Guardian] etc. N/x = red bars go up. Spamming heals and taking advantage of soul-reaping is going to output more HP boosts than the average monk, even considering Divine Favor. For human players I don't see why you would not choose a monk. Proper placement of prot skills is simply amazing. With AI though...prot = fail. They spam [Protective Spirit] as a heal, not a pre-prot for example. AI spamming simply burns their Energy like joint at a Rastafarian party..... |
