I think you can still get trial keys that allow you to play the game for a few days. To be honest, you can pick up GW (+expansions) pretty cheap.
If you want to get involved any expansion works fine but would strongly suggest you get Eye of the North with your main expansion. If I had to pick one of the expansions I would start with Nightfall. Those two combined give you access to heroes, substantial content and pretty neat items/drops/titles. Enjoy GW Silver |

So the standard GW game i need is just called Guild Wars?
I'm not too worried about the expansion packs yet as i want to learn the basics first. |

there is only 1 expansion pack, which is eye of the north.
all the others are stand alone games. The Original is just called Guild Wars (on the cover), although it referred to as Prophecies. Factions and Nightfall are each stand alone games. imo start with Prophecies and buy them in order they came out. Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North. also imo you should pick them all up as quickly as possible because having all of them opens up a LOT more variety in the game, weather its PvP, PvE or Builds there are just far more options when you own all the campaigns. |

Eye of the North (GWEN or EoTN) is the only expansion, it requires a chapter (above) to play. Personally, I'd go with Prophecies (the original) and GWEN in the bundle pack. Prophecies has the best learning curve for a new player, skill quests and mission styles. GWEN allows you to get level 20 heroes very quickly, which is useful as the hench in Prophecies are... interesting. |

i would recommend to try GW for sure, long time until gw2. Myself love factions not just coz of easy version of PVP called alliance battles where u can fight other ppl with own team.If u enjoy ancient asia-german(lol ye strange mix) factions with cool story. = its also the easiest of all games
Nightfall is like egypt n awesome to get heroes - which r some kind of helpers when u cant find a team of ppl n freely change their skill bars as u wish(u can take em to any GW game with u not just nightfall). GW proph is quiet hard n long for start thou it was the first game u could buy - dark age with knights. Eye of the north has heroes aswel n its all about jungle, dungeons n dinos ^^ -but i wont recommant to start with this game since its more "elite" place n u can get there when lv..10 was it? -u need proph,nf or factions to play it thou GL! i would tell u no need for trial just buy one of em its a deal of your life. if u buy all of em its more skills, more combos more power! (factions ! psss) |

Hey there,
It's good to see new people getting interested in Guild Wars! Well, my opinion is that you should get a trial key, which i think is available from the actual Guild Wars official site. If not, search around! Also, in my personal opinion i think you should firstly get Nightfall. Nightfall allows you to use Heroes, which are a big help! You're able to customize their armor, and customize the skills they use which is very handy if there are no people in a certain outpost to help you, or your friends/guildies are busy. So in short, get 'Guild Wars: Nightfall', and get a trial key.. You will definately enjoy it. Hope to see you online some day! |

I'd recommend you to buy either Nightfall or Prophecies first. Prophecies allows you to get skills by doing quests and has a slow learning curve ; Nightfall gives you heroes and gives you access to Paragons and Dervishes. However, since you will not have unlocked most skills, your heroes will have bad builds, and most of the time henchmen will be better.
The only advantage to Factions I can see is that it allows you to create Assassins and Ritualists. If you like the game, try to buy all chapters, it gives you access to more skills, more content... |

Nightfall for a newbie is no good at all because of the lack of skills. Seen horrible builds before, like a read the wind ranger Dunkoro and a cyclone axe warrior Zhed. Nightfall is better for those players who already unlocked many skills, they know what skills to use and they also can afford to upgrade the heroes. Heroes are rly good, but you can do just fine with henchies, especially the lvl 20 ones are decent. Back in time, when there was only Prophecies, guess, all of us survived with henchies.
For a totally newbie to the game, henchies are fine. So the best is to buy Prophecies first and then the other chapters, Factions, Nightfall, EoTN. Last edited by Princess of Ayundil; May 28, 2008 at 11:59 AM // 11:59.. |

I would suggest the platinum edition. There are two that you can find in the stores. They retail at $39.99. For that you basically get 2 for the price of 1.
Either Proph+Factions or Proph+Gwen. I would specifically suggest Proph+Gwen because of the heroes. |

Get prohecies first to learn the basics

Also heroes won't be much of a problem since there are usualy some people in missions and towns for you to party with even now (i made a new warrior recently and hardly even found a lack of people to party with). Also you can join guilds that help new people to the game and they will help you if you ever get stuck. |

Start with the platinum edition that comes with Prophecies and EoTN. That is what I did and I was happy with my purchase. You can get enough nice hereos easily in EoTN to use for completing Prophecies which imo is important because even though this is an online game, I find myself playing alone 95% of the time, and when I do join a group of real players it is often times slower and more difficult than just playing with myself and my heroes.
I eventually bought Factions and Nightfall for all the additional spells and hereos though, which anyone who is even remotely serious about having the best character they can have will feel forced to do. |

Check out the PvE/P recrutiment forums below, guilds are always looking for new people.
Good to see you're getting into this. If you need any help and haven't got your guild yet, whisp me in-game. I've been feeling generous lately. P.S. Anyone want a lot of silk? I'm nearing a stack and have no use for it >.< |

Please use Search before posting a new thread. There's also the FAQ and Which Guild Wars Chapter should I buy? that will answer questions you may have.
