The Jitte, Colossal Pick, Etc.
Well Idk if this has been asked before but,
The Jitte - Sword that Does Blunt Damage The Colossal Pick - Hammer that does piercing Damage The Piercing Axe - Axe that obviously does Piercing Damage Are there any advantages to this or what? Because I have not seen any skills that require blunt damage or piercing damage to properly use the skill Is the damage type the only special thing about the weapons? |

They're useful against some mob types with resistances or players wielding shields with +10 vs Slashing/Blunt/etc. Just more variety, that's all.

There aren't many monsters with proven resistances and weaknesses to physical damage; skeletons in FoW are weak to blunt and resistant to piercing, and plants are weak to slashing. Otherwise physical damage types don't matter too much in PvE. I doubt they're too significant in PvP either.
[Bladeturn Refrain] specifies slashing damage; there might be other skills, but I don't remember any.

well if u come at a monk with his al+10 vs blunt
and u have a piercing hammer...u'll bypass it unless hes memorized the skin look but i dun think many monks do that i often use piercing dmg daggers for this reason most monks will equip their al+10 vs slashing shield (at least thats wut im expecting they'll do) |

I'm far from a PvP pro, but I think they are significant in PvP. I've met a lot of people that keep sets of shields handy when playing (vs Piercing, vs Slashing, etc.)
If you're using a shield instead of an offhand and you see a team with more than half the players carrying bows coming at you, switch to your vs. Piercing shield. If they're coming at you with scythes, switch to your vs. Slashing. Given the limited number of weapon quickslots, I doubt many people actively switch shields much during a fight. However, there are ways to get a look at the opposing team before the counter runs out/gates open in some PvP maps. And sometimes you have a couple seconds in the beginning where you can see the team coming and have time to switch shields before they arrive. The weapons you mentioned with unusual inherent damage types are one of the ways to combat such defenses. snaek's example is a good one. Unless the monk he mentioned knows that hammer skin, they'll likely just see the damage taken from hammer attacks on their effects monitor and assume blunt damage. And yes, other than their unusual damage type, they work the same as other axes/swords/hammers. I think the Jitte showed up first with Factions, but the Colossal Pick and the Piercing Axe have been around as long as Tyria. Until NF and inscriptions, I don't think it was so easy to get shields with 10ar vs. * Cheers, Luny |

Colossal Pick was from Factions. I would think that a good enough player would recognize the weapons, seeing as how there are only 3 skins with unusual damage types.

Oops, I was wrong about the hammers. Thanks for the correction. Thought I found one in the Shiverpeaks once, but I guess it must've been a Piercing Axe.

As noted, it isn't a big issue. Certain skills, armors, and shield insciptions factor into this, but since it is hard to know what you will face, it is hard to plan accordingly. Bonelace and Infiltrators insignias offer extra armor against piercing damage, Vanguards offers extra armor against blunt damage, and sabatuers offers extra armor against slashing damage. Elementalist, Ranger, Monk, and Warrior all have insignias that offer extra armor against elemental damage of some kind. Unless you know what you will be facing, or have skills to change the damage type, it won't matter much. Having weapons that do several different types of damage is key. If you face something like a Ranger with high armor against Elemental damage, then you wouldn't want to use your Fiery Dragon Sword.
