Nope.

More, you don't have to ascend at level 20, you can ascend at a lower level too.

so it doesnt ascend everyone? i dont want to take my second character all the way down there just to get gladiators defense

But do i have to beat the missions down there to be able to play the game in hard mode?

You have to beat the final mission in a certain campaign with any character to unlock Hard Mode for every Level 20 character on that account.

You have to ascend each character seperately.

You can also buy an elite warrior tome, if you have it unlocked. They go for about 6k nowadays, I think. Maybe slightly less.

to play any of the games or the expansion in hard mode you have to beat the final mission with one character.

Any other characters can then play that game in hm once they reach lvl 20. you can get a couple of runs in prophecies to bypass huge chunks of the game, but it kinda spoils the experience, so if you wanna shell out your cash for a run through the game, be my guest.

My advice though is to play through the whole thing at least once.

Besides, if you don't ascend in Proph,... It means that you won't be able to change your Secondary, AND you can't get all 200 of your attribute points. The latter is waaaay more serious.

Weird, i didnt even realise the quests were down in the desert until i completed the game. Might have to get my monk back down there, altho if your builds right, it dosent make too much of a difference ^^
