Rarity? As in, actually amount of each you will come across in the game? Okay.
White (drops from everything all the time) Blue (drops from everything fairly often) Green (drops only from bosses at variable rates, but people farm the hell out of them, so the supply is abundant, therefore they are not rare at all; some are obtained as end-of-game rewards) Purple (drops from practically everything somewhat often) Gold (drops from almost but not quite everything every now and then)

The order is:
White = no mod crap blue = some mods that are lower all though because of inscriptions some can be made perfect. Purple = generally better on average inherent mods and yet again inscriptions now make these possible to be perfect. Gold = The only way for non inscription items to be perfect but inscription based no different than blue or purple. Green = Boss drop of a perfect gold that isn't moddable in anyway. Golds in most scenarios are more useful however greens are a cheap way to get some decent items. They aren't better than golds nor worse unless your talking about trade value which golds are far higher since they can be modded. In summary the color use to matter on whether an item could be perfect but inscriptions have thrown that out the window. I hope that helps. |

Purples are indeed generally better than blues, and blues better than whites.
Most Greens (unique) are better than golds (rare) in two respects - they're max damage (req 9) and have perfect mods on them. (Leaving the ones you can get in low-level areas out of the equation) However, golds can be max damage with Req 8 or 7, the mods on golds may or may not be perfect, BUT they can be swapped out to match your particular needs. |

2 additional points
If "for whatever reason" you added a mod to a white item it becomes a blue item. Don't know why anyone would want to but you can. Greens and Golds Most max damage Greens have a skill requirement of 9 Most Max Damage Golds have a skill requirement of 12 or 13. Those with lower requirements are incredibly rare, like in I haven't had had a gold item with a requirement of 8 drop in normal game play in 3 years. The skill required to use an item or to gain a benefit from an item is important. Have a lower skill and you do less damage fewer critical hits and the main effect of the item like + energy armour etc will not count. Sorry to complicate things but you will have forgotten most of this by the time you start getting such drops. Hopefully by then you will have online sources to check them out Have fun |

As I've said in other threads, there used to be an "order" to it - white, to blue, to purple, to gold/green - but in all the futzing about with updates to chests, weapons mods, inscriptions, etc, there is no longer any clear difference between them. I have some blue weapons (both drops and collectors) that have just as good stats as any gold or green. It really doesn't matter any more, except that, when it comes to selling things, max, low req golds are the most valuable - whether it's because of rarity or simply people's perceptions doesn't matter.
It's one of the things I hope they fix in GW2. Last edited by Quaker; Nov 03, 2008 at 03:51 PM // 15:51.. |

A lot of people here seem to be saying that Greens are better than Golds, however I would really tend to disagree with this for a couple of reasons.
A) Although people say that one of the best things about greens is that they have perfect mods on them, this is never a great advantage generally because 90% of the time the mod on a green, while perfect, is simply not useful at all (e.g +15% dmg while health is BELOW 50% and other such useless mods) B) You cannot change the mod on a green weapon, this may mean that while you really like the skin of the weapon, the mods may not be the ones that you need at all, and if the mods are the ones that you need, chances are the skin isn't probably the one you like the most. C) Golds on the hand, can be modded with any mod you like and can be any skin of your choice and this to me is why they are superior to the green weapons. Even though it may cost you quite a bit extra for that awesome skin at a low req and to buy the perfect mods, i'd much rather have this freedom of choice instead of being stuck with a weapon that may or may not have the skin I like and that I cannot change at all. |

technically, the "real" order is:
white > blue > purple > gold > green > red (pvp) but because of this... Quote:
i'd say the order is more like this: for quality: white > green > purple > blue (crafter/collector) > gold for rarity: white > blue > green > purple > gold |

There is an exception with Blues and Purples though. I would generally say that a purple salvage item is worth less than a blue salvage item with respect to the runes it has... For example, you might get a purple swordsmanship rune or expertise, or even a purple caster rune. They are generally worth less than their blue counterparts.
