I played Runescape for at least 5 years and can tell you that they had a bot problem as well. They've tried programing, went to meetings, even discussed with country leaders to find a solution to the problem. What they ended up doing was making the game have near balanced trade with a little leniency depending upon the more quest points you have. If not they wrote a report that it would ruin their game. I imagine Guild Wars is undergoing the same situation and will persue a similar course of action.
