Forget about whats wrong and whats right... Your new to the game so play the game how it's supposed to be played. It's all about trial and error so make mistakes and learn from them. Trust me it's the only way you'll learn how to play the game properly... Being told what to play and how to play it is just pointless and spoils the beauty of this game if you ask me! In able to offer advice, we need some info.
1. Which campaign(s) do you have? 2. Where do you like to play - front line, mid-range, or caster? 3. How do you like to play - up-front damage, in-direct damage, support? If you would like to see descriptions of the various professions and the secondaries you can use visit the wiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

Whatever profession you choose will be fine, although a mesmer would be pretty difficult for a beginner in PvE or PvP.
One mistake new players usually make is wanting to do everything at once, and it just doesn't work out. If you're playing a ranger, don't try to be a spellcaster. A warrior is not a healer. Casters are not melee. |

Welcome to GW! For a starter, I suggest ranger, warrior, elementalist, monk or MAYBE necromancer. Mesmer is very tough for a newcomer, and necromancer may be too. But it's your opinion. I find monk to be my favorite profession as they have some of the best solo builds imo. Whichever profession you pick will be great =)

ritualist is probably the most fun to play for me.. speed and damage you really can't go wrong with a ranger.. I like the the rit though
elementalist is fun when you start playing with it.. like mix air and earth- ride the lightning into a bucktooth choobie in arena then shock his ass.. when he's down give him a earthquake that will get his bucktooth chattering.. make sure you end it with some shards so he doesn't see your build while he's lying face first in a puddle of piss! |

warrior is best for a new player because you can afford to make mistakes because the bars are so simple and easy to play.

Just pick the class which interests you most. And honestly, trial and error = fun. Not to mention if someone holds onto your hand and leads you through everything, you won't really be able to learn anything. Anyways, welcome to Guild Wars and whatever you do, don't compare it to another game... especially WoW. Hope you enjoy your stay You're more than welcome to contact me if you ever need help aside from asking me to run you places/money. Reason being for a new player, getting ran to places and getting free money to buy stuff right off the bat really ruins the game. IGN: Rang Iku |

i suggest you look on the forums for each charchter where there is a sticky which is basicaly a 'overview' Hope you enjoy yourself Imo Choose somthing intersting Stay away from eles Rts Dervish and Pargons ... myself and other people i have known have gotten bored of them quickly. I personally can never get enuff of rangers i loooove them to bits but whatever floats ur boat. |
